Summary:

The huskies and residence counsellor contributes to student success by addressing mental health needs through timely and accessible clinical counselling services delivered within an embedded student athletics context, in collaboration with campus support systems. This role involves working in a confidential clinical environment with students, including student-athletes, who may be highly distressed and require assessment and monitoring. Key responsibilities include conducting assessments, delivering psychotherapy, and responding to crises, while supporting individuals experiencing complex and intersecting concerns such as academic stress, performance pressure, and mental health challenges. This position integrates mental health services into a high-performance athletic environment, supporting athlete wellbeing, injury recovery, and identity development. The counsellor also participates in mental health promotion, consultation with campus and athletics partners, and coordinated care planning. Work aligns with institutional priorities related to diversity, multicultural awareness, and Indigenous engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs urgent risk assessments and develops crisis management plans for students presenting with risk to self or others.
  • Responds to students in crisis and conducts same-day assessments.
  • Conducts comprehensive intake interviews and evaluates mental health functioning, risk indicators, and treatment needs of students, including student athletes.
  • Provides psychotherapy services, including individual, couple, and group interventions, as well as psychoeducational programming.
  • Delivers clinical counselling services within an embedded student athletics context, addressing performance-related stressors, injury, and athlete identity factors.
  • Supports students experiencing complex and intersecting concerns, including mental health, academic stress, and wellbeing challenges.
  • Oversees a clinical caseload in accordance with professional practice standards and discipline-specific expectations.
  • Coordinates care, including referrals and follow-up activities, to support continuity of treatment.
  • Provides consultation to staff, coaches, and interdisciplinary team members regarding student mental health within ethical and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Contributes to targeted mental health promotion initiatives aligned with clinical priorities and identified student needs.
  • Supports coordinated care in collaboration with athletics administration, interdisciplinary support teams, student wellness services, and campus partners.
  • Participates in outreach activities and wellness initiatives that support student and student-athlete mental health.
  • Supports institutional priorities related to diversity, multicultural understanding, and Indigenous engagement.
  • Communicates and acts in a respectful and professional manner, collaborates effectively, abides by policy, and contributes to a positive and productive work and learning environment.

Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree in psychology, education, or social work; a doctorate degree is an asset.
  • Registration with the appropriate professional association.
  • Minimum of five years of post-graduate experience as a registered clinician in assessment and psychotherapy.
  • Experience conducting urgent risk assessments and crisis intervention related to mental health and suicide.
  • Knowledge of student development, diversity, and multicultural issues.
  • Familiarity with the university and community resources is an asset.
  • Strong counselling abilities, particularly in brief treatment with young adult populations.
  • Ability to apply advanced clinical intervention techniques informed by knowledge of psychopathology and assessment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to assess and respond to complex and evolving situations in high-demand environments.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively in a team.
