Job Details
The City of St. Albert is recruiting an individual to join our Public Operations department as a Supervisor, Urban Forestry.
Reporting to Manager, Open Space Operations & Urban Forestry, this position will be responsible for short-term branch planning, operational procedures and practices and the day-to-day operations of the Trees, Weed & Pest, and Horticulture (Urban Forestry) branch of Public Operations.
Responsibilities
- Leading Unit operations by setting goals, ensuring effective municipal service delivery, supporting planning, and engaging with the community and organizational initiatives.
- Leading personnel management by overseeing work assignments, resources, and records; supporting staff development, performance, and succession planning; fostering a positive, innovative work environment; and guiding recruitment, communication, and employee relations.
- Leading project and contract management by planning and coordinating contracts and capital projects; ensuring quality, budget, and timelines are met; overseeing inspections, records, and warranties; resolving issues; and managing related operational contracts and emergency coordination.
- Managing supplies and inventory by procuring materials, maintaining stock levels, and supporting vendor relationships in line with policy.
- Supporting budget management by monitoring expenditures, prioritizing spending, and assisting with cost recovery and grants.
Qualifications
- A two-year diploma in Forestry, Recreation Management, Business Management, or a related discipline is required. Candidates must also have a minimum of seven years of progressively responsible supervisory experience, preferably within a unionized environment.
- Licenses or certifications in a related field—such as arborist certification, a provincial pesticide applicator license, or Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) are considered assets.
- Demonstrating strong customer service, communication, and time management skills, with experience in public relations, risk and conflict management, procurement, and building effective relationships with internal teams, the community, and regional partners.
- Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be considered.
Hours of Work
- The department operates 24/7/365 days per year; consequently, after hours and on-call work may be required to support operations.
- We offer a compressed bi-weekly work schedule of 72 hours, Monday - Friday, 8:00 – 5:00, with a biweekly regular day off (RDO).
Compensation
- The salary ranges from $96,878.86 - $119,233.92 per year including a comprehensive benefits package and accrued paid vacation starting at 3 weeks per year.

Term
- This is a term position from ASAP to March 28, 2027, with the possibility of an extension.
