Job description

Course number and title: CIV382Y1 Y – Civil Engineering Portfolio

Course description: Students will assemble a portfolio of communication assignments drawn from their second and third year Civil Engineering courses as a showcase of their ability to meet the graduate attributes for communication. The student will demonstrate competence in discipline specific written, oral, and visual communication through the selection of assignments for the portfolio. Each entry will be framed by a short introduction speaking to the context of the work and its significance in the portfolio. Students whose communication work is not up to standard will be provided with opportunities for revision. The course will be offered on a credit/no credit basis; students who receive no credit must retake the course in year 4. This is a 0.00 weighted course.

Class schedule: Must schedule one orientation lecture in September at time that suits CIV Year 3 schedule; otherwise no whole class meetings. Contact time made up of individual appointments scheduled between students and coordinator

Dates of appointment: September 1, 2026– December 31, 2026

Hours: 50% HCE (up to a maximum of 115 hrs)

Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for a half course (HCE), inclusive of vacation pay, are: Sessional Lecturer 1 - $9,997.47; Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term - $10,699.22; Sessional Lecturer 2 - $10,699.22; Sessional Lecturer 2 Long Term - $10,953.96; Sessional Lecturer 3 - $10,953.96 and Sessional Lecturer 3 Long Term - $11,212.15. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the Collective Agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications: include at least a Master’s degree in an appropriate discipline (such as, but not limited to, Communication, English, Engineering, Education, Technology Studies) with strong written and oral communication skills, and a demonstrated commitment to teaching communication and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications: include a PhD in an appropriate discipline (as above), and TESL or other training/certification in second-language instruction at the university level, and familiarity with engineering communication practices, and experience as an instructor in first year foundation course, Engineering Strategies and Practice, and/or second year Civil Engineering communication course. Experience in Civil Engineering education is also highly desirable.

Description of duties:

  • Serving as the lead instructor and coordinator in CIV382, which involves supporting up to 30 students in their portfolio development, grading portfolio submissions, developing and delivering instructional content, and coordinating the teaching team’s support for student portfolio development

  • Liaising with CIV/MIN faculty to support and strengthen existing collaborations, identify other potential points of contact for communication instruction and create additional opportunities for transdisciplinary skill development in the CIVMIN curriculum, and contribute to curricular mapping

  • Reviewing, revising, preparing and delivering content for course integrations, including workshops and lectures, as well as benchmarking sessions

  • Must have the ability to adapt to different communication instruction activities and move online if required.
