What you can expect from this position:

Working with the Associate Director, Airside & Infrastructure Engineering (AIE) this position supports the Capital Project and Commercial Activation teams with the delivery of project requirements as it relates to Structural design and compliance to applicable codes and standards. The incumbent will work jointly with other members of AIE, other Engineering fields and multi-functional teams to resolve problems and support various key GTAA partners.

As a Senior Engineer, Structural, you will:

  • Provide technical direction, develop and document policies, standards, and guidelines for safety and efficiency in operation, maintenance, construction, design and planning activities.
  • Participate in and carry out compliance reviews of structural submissions from external parties and provide recommendations and guidance to make sure applicable codes, standards, regulations, and GTAA requirements are satisfied.
  • Provide support in the determination, interpretation and assessment of technical project requirements and development of documents such as Scope of Work (SOW) and tender evaluation criteria, and participate in tender evaluation for capital projects as needed.
  • Assist GTAA clients with the preparation of business cases and project proposals, design solutions and capital cost estimates to support the approval and execution of capital projects.
  • Provide non-resident engineering services for capital and tenant projects by inspecting work at different stages, review of shop drawings and test reports.
  • Check that construction and installations practices, materials and methods follow applicable codes, regulations, GTAA standards/specifications in a safe quality manner.
  • Give technical recommendations during project commissioning and post construction activities and produce reports to communicate conditions, deficiencies and corrective actions when required.
  • Generate potential physical solutions/options which meet the project program by examining requirements against project constraints identified in information gathering activities.
  • Complete small to medium-scale assessments and/or designs in support of other GTAA departments.
  • Coordinate and preserve assigned airside / groundside assets and keep track of inventory and condition of one or several major systems.
  • Use technical and investigative skills to understand root cause of variably complex problems and resolve with appropriate solutions.

This unionized position is classified at the Band 10 level, with an hourly wage range of $, based on a 37.5 hour work week. As part of the recruitment process, you may be required to complete a test

This is the role for you, if you have:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO). For out of province trained Engineers (out of province or international), Engineer-in-Training (EIT) status will be accepted under the following conditions: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from a PEO-recognized educational institution; no educational deficiencies are noted by the PEO, whereby candidates have no outstanding remedial courses or examinations required to obtain licensure; full licensure can be obtained within 12 months of job offer.
  • 10+ years experience in structural design, construction and maintenance of industrial and commercial facilities, testing and commissioning, specification and report writing.
  • Experience working within a large project, multidisciplinary design and construction environment.
  • Valid class “G” Ontario Driver’s license is required.
  • Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • Ability to obtain and retain Transportation Security Clearance.

Knowledge and Skills you bring, that set you up for success:

  • Knowledge of civil/structural engineering theories and principles and engineering management practices.
  • Knowledge, ability and desire to apply Professional Engineering statutes including Design, Protection of the Public.
  • Strong knowledge of the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) and Ontario Building Code (OBC), as well as applicable CSA Standards.
  • Effective ability to use computer aided technology and apply engineering design software.
  • Working knowledge of CAD software such as BIM/Revit, MicroStation, and AutoCAD.
  • Skilled knowledge and use of computer applications including Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Project, etc.) and Bluebeam, etc.
  • Working knowledge of structural modelling software is an asset.
  • Understanding of contract terms and conditions, experience in contract management and familiarity with construction law is an asset.
  • Knowledge of principles of Facility management, related methods and software.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications and applicable codes, and use sound engineering judgment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills to communicate engineering issues and requirements.
  • Ability to prepare written technical documents including condition reports, presentations, technical proposals and specifications.
  • Capability to set GTAA client expectations, comprehend issues, influence changes to scope and resolutions and communicate technical requirements, constraints and perspectives, impacts, risks and progress to partners.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with team members, project managers, and various collaborators, along with external consultants and partners.
  • Thorough, well organized, and self-motivated with the ability to prioritize, schedule tasks and handle multiple assignments and tasks simultaneously.
