Job description

NOW HIRING: Night Shift Health & Safety Advisor

Actalent Services' general contractor client is seeking a Night Shift Health & Safety Advisor to support a major transit construction project in Edmonton during night shift operations for a 4 month contract. This field-based position focuses on conducting safety and environmental inspections, performing safety observations, and providing hands-on support to construction teams working on civil, structural, rail, electrical, tunnel, and other complex scopes. The advisor works closely with site leadership to ensure all activities are completed safely, in compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards, while promoting a proactive safety culture across the project.

Responsibilities

  • Lead health and safety activities on night shift in a fully field-based capacity, supporting active construction operations across civil, structural, rail, electrical, tunnel, and related scopes.
  • Conduct regular field safety inspections, audits, and observations to verify compliance with safety procedures, regulatory requirements, and project-specific standards.
  • Identify hazards and unsafe conditions in the field, communicate findings clearly, and work with site leadership and crews to implement corrective and preventive actions.
  • Perform environmental inspections in environmentally sensitive areas, ensuring work activities align with environmental protection requirements and best practices.
  • Use digital safety inspection platforms and mobile reporting tools to document inspections, observations, incidents, and corrective actions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Support incident reporting and investigation processes, contributing to root cause analysis and lessons learned using recognized investigation methodologies where applicable.
  • Collaborate closely with supervisors, forepersons, and other site personnel to integrate safety into daily planning, task execution, and work permitting processes.
  • Provide guidance and coaching to workers on safe work practices, confined space entry, use of personal protective equipment, and adherence to site safety rules.
  • Verify that workers have appropriate certifications and training, such as CSTS, Standard First Aid, and Confined Space, and reinforce their proper application in the field.
  • Monitor night shift activities involving heavy equipment, structural steel, carpentry, and electrical work to ensure safe operating procedures are followed.
  • Participate in or support safety meetings, toolbox talks, and shift kick-offs, sharing relevant safety information and reinforcing key risk controls.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision during night shift hours, making sound safety decisions and escalating issues when necessary.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of safety processes and procedures by providing feedback based on field observations and incident trends.

Essential Skills

  • 5+ years of health and safety experience supporting active construction projects in industrial, oil and gas, civil, infrastructure, commercial, or transit environments.
  • Proven ability to independently lead field safety activities, including inspections, audits, observations, hazard identification, and direct support to site operations.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting field inspections, safety observations, and formal safety audits on construction sites.
  • Strong understanding of construction safety practices, hazard recognition, and risk control strategies in complex, multi-discipline project environments.
  • Experience working independently in a field-based role, particularly in night shift or remote site conditions.
  • Valid CSTS (Construction Safety Training System) certification.
  • Valid Standard First Aid certification.
  • Valid Confined Space certification with practical experience applying confined space entry procedures.
  • Experience using digital safety inspection platforms or mobile reporting tools to capture and manage safety data.
  • Clear and effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage with crews and site leadership on safety matters.
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work with minimal supervision during night shift hours while maintaining high safety standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience using Procore or similar construction management software platforms.
  • Familiarity with TapRoot or other structured incident investigation methodologies and root cause analysis techniques.
  • Prior experience on LRT, rail, transit, or large infrastructure projects.
  • Experience in oil and gas project environments, including industrial construction sites.
  • Civil construction experience, particularly in earthworks, utilities, or structural concrete.
  • Tunnel construction experience, including awareness of tunnel-specific hazards and controls.
  • Environmental inspection experience, especially in projects involving environmentally sensitive areas.
  • Experience working on projects involving heavy equipment, structural steel erection, carpentry, and electrical installations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and influence safe behavior across diverse crews.
  • Ability to adapt to changing site conditions and multiple scopes of work while maintaining a consistent focus on safety.

Work Environment

This role is 100% field-based and is dedicated to night shift operations on a major transit project in South Edmonton. The project includes bridge construction, rail installation, tunnel work, civil construction, electrical work, and activities in environmentally sensitive areas, creating a dynamic and technically complex work environment. The expected shift hours are approximately 6:00 PM to 4:30 AM, with a shift schedule anticipated to be either 6 days on and 1 day off or 10 days on and 4 days off.

The advisor works outdoors and in active construction zones, frequently around heavy equipment, structural steel, carpentry activities, and electrical work.
