The Project Cost Controller will be responsible for ensuring accurate and timely job cost reporting across all projects, reviewing budgets and risks, ensuring workflows and proper controls are followed, coordinating with project and accounting teams on financial processes, and driving continuous improvement in project accounting systems and policies.
Responsibilities
• Ensure the accuracy, timeliness, and reliability of Job Cost information across all projects, including budgets and actuals.
• Review all project budgets weekly at a division and/or sub-contract level to assess quantities, pricing, rates, schedules, and other key inputs/assumptions, to assess key risk areas and recommend mitigants.
• Generate, review, analyze, and present action plans based upon weekly and monthly Job Cost reports and other project monitoring information as required.
• Prepare monthly progress draws with updated project budgets including all invoices, statutory declarations, change orders, WSIB and insurance back-up for submission to the Quantity Surveyor within the last 5 days of each month
• Work closely with Project Management and Accounting Services to coordinate the creation, approval and maintenance of Vendor Packages, Purchase Orders, Contracts, entry and payment of Vendor Invoices in accordance with the Construction Lien Act requirements, including holdback monitoring and release
• Together with Project Management, implement and enforce controls for approval workflows and invoice matching to purchase orders and contracts
• Build and update cashflow forecasts for future project draws based on updated project schedules provided by Project Management for cash requirements planning
• Participate in all Project start-up and close-out meetings by providing required documentation and reports, providing financial insights, and implementing action plans.
• Lead the ongoing evaluation of and optimization of all project accounting systems and processes, and the development and implementation of enhanced policies and procedures.
Requirements
• Minimum 3–5 years of Cost Controller or Project Accounting experience in the industry
• Bachelor’s degree in related field
• Strong knowledge of budgeting, forecasting, and job cost reporting processes
• Proficiency with accounting software and ERP systems; advanced Excel skills required
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational abilities with attention to detail
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with project managers, vendors, and accounting teams
