GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, the Advisor, Restorative Justice Program oversees the Wood Buffalo Restorative Justice program, with the goal of providing restorative justice alternatives within the criminal justice system and the community. The incumbent works with community members, RCMP, court staff, schools, and other partner agencies to receive referrals, provide information, review candidates, facilitate circles, and ensure confirmation of program completion. Primary responsibilities include:

Guidance and Support: Assists leadership with overall program delivery by coordinating programming, identifying, and prioritizing needs, and aiding with the development and implementation of policies, best practices, and procedures. Provides guidance and support to ensure all legislated obligations are met. Liaises with the victim, RCMP, and Crown attorneys and all other partners. Attends court as required, providing written or verbal testimony if necessary. Facilitates restorative justice circles and mediations involving the responsible person, the affected person, and other applicable parties. Creates and maintains solid working relationships with community volunteers, Indigenous communities, and other partnering agencies. Engages with community members and organizations to raise awareness of restorative justice principles and programs within the region.

Program Development:Assists with the continued development and maintenance of the Wood Buffalo Restorative Justice Program. Develops, researches, and compiles information for branch budgets, systems, procedures, registrations, clients, claims, and reports. Develops and delivers programs to educate the community. Partners with the region’s school system to develop proactive youth programming. Develops communication strategies and education and awareness presentations for schools and communities. Offers input for program structuring and protocols, identifying potential barriers to service and proactively seeking solutions.

Service Delivery: Receives referrals and complete intake documentation. Facilitates and/or participate in Restorative Justice Circles. Collaborates with clients to create and develop accountability agreements. Mediates discussions to address the impacts of crime, facilitate dialogue, and foster understanding and accountability. Coordinates the design and implementation of projects. Maintains accurate records, completing monthly and quarterly reporting as required. Collect feedback from program participants. Travels regularly throughout the Municipality to rural communities, facilitating programing and ensuring effective and fair delivery of all aspects of restorative justice programming across the region.

SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

Candidates need to show evidence of the following:

  • Solid foundational understanding of restorative justice philosophies and best practices.
  • Knowledge of youth and adult Alberta Justice Systems.
  • Excellent listening and interpersonal skills, with the ability to connect, build trust, and interact with clients across a wide variety of demographics.
  • Sound judgement, with well-developed conflict resolution, negotiation, and mediation skills.
  • Ability to manage and de-escalate conflict, foster dialogue, and seek mutually acceptable solutions.
  • Self-starter, with effective time management, coordination, and organization skills.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture, history, and communities throughout the Municipality.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to adapt communication styles to best connect with their audience (, language for youth programming vs. adult, etc.).
  • Ability to speak in a public setting to all levels of community members, and facilitate circles, meetings, etc. as required.
  • Experience with confidential file management, and the ability to exercise a high degree of discretion due to the confidentiality of materials and information.
  • Proficiency with various Microsoft programs, and a working knowledge of database software applications.

EDUCATION:

  • Diploma in Criminology, Criminal Justice, Social Work, or related field is required.
  • An equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Two (2) years of experience working within restorative justice, or another related area such as conflict resolution, mediation, victim support or advocacy.
  • Restorative Justice meditation/facilitation/case conferencing experience is considered an asset.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to acquire and maintain a RCMP enhanced reliability security clearance.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence.
  • Working in a highly confidential environment, the incumbent will be required to travel throughout the region, including to the rural communities and within local schools. This is a front facing position in the community and this role may be exposed to angry persons and/or verbal abuse. Due to the nature of the position, there is potential for exposure to high stress or emotionally disturbing information.
