Job Title:Clinical Nursing Instructor

Course:NUSC3P80 –Nursing in Advanced and Altered Contexts 1– Medical/Surgical

Department:Nursing

Term of Appointment:Contracts for this course are 12 weeks with one 12-hourshift 0630-1830per week (any daySaturday to Tuesday, based on student registration numbers).

Nominal Hours:216

WageRate:$ -$ hour*

Duties:

Reporting to the Undergraduate Clinical Supervisor, the Clinical Nursing Instructor is responsible to:

  • Prepareforandsupervisestudents inaclinical settingfor the experientialcomponentof thecourse.

  • CollaboratewiththeCourseInstructorto ensurestudentactivitiesarealignedwiththecoursesyllabus and learningobjectives.

  • Prepare patient assignmentsbeforestudents’ arrival on theunit(for hospitalplacements)carefully consideringeach student’sexperience level and capabilities and course learningobjectives.

  • Review the student’spreparationand planfor their clinical activities with attentionandintegration of nursing, pathophysiological, pharmacologic, and therapeutic concepts.

  • Encourage an inquiring, theory, and evidence-based approach to nursing practice.

  • Facilitate interprofessional andintraprofessionalcommunication among students and all members of the health care teamoragency.

  • Modelpatient-centered care.

  • Familiarizestudentswith the relevantpolicies and protocols in the clinical setting with emphasis onanyhealth & safety requirements.

  • Provide ongoing verbal feedback tostudentsandmaintaina professional relationship with all learners.

  • Assessreflectivepracticeassignments, professionalpractice plans,and provideconstructive feedback to all assignmentsdesignatedas the responsibility of the ClinicalNursingInstructor in thesyllabus.

  • Complete regular, comprehensiveformativefeedbacknotesregardingstudent progress andadvisethecourseinstructorimmediatelyof serious or ongoing studentconcerns.

  • Identifyclinical performancegaps andfacilitatethe development and implementation ofstudentsuccessplans in partnership withthe course instructorasrequired.

  • Complete midterm and finalevaluationofstudentclinical performanceand achievement of course competencies.

  • Facilitatestudent meetings /post-clinical conferences,andcoordinateappropriate resources(, multi-media).Foster discussion andreflectionto enhancea positive and respectfullearningenvironment.

  • Adhere to confidentiality and privacy standards and legislation.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of a BScNrequired;Master’sdegree preferred;

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses ofOntario;

  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical work experienceas anurse;

  • Clinical work experienceinmedical/surgicalnursingwithin the last 10 yearsand/or clinical teaching experience inmedical/surgical nursingwithin the last 10years;

  • Desire toinstruct and share knowledgewith nursingstudents;

  • Previousexperience as a preceptoror with clinical instructionwould be anasset;

  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity,andinclusion;

  • Ability to address concerns and managedifficult situations, and toidentifyand act upon emergencysituations;

  • Effective organizational, time management, and communicationskills;

  • Ability to provide a valid Police Record Check (E-PIC or VSC) prior to the contract start date, if required by clinical agency. The Police check must be no greater than 6 months old as of contract startdate;

  • Ability to meet the clinical site occupational and immunization requirements
