Job description
DutiesDuties for the position vary and will include:• Preparing for and supporting classes • Leading or assisting with tutorials or other forms of classroom instruction • Holding office hours in person and/or online • Grading assignments, tests, and examinations in accordance with provided rubrics • Invigilating examinations • Providing timely responses to student inquiries • Supporting course administration using Quercus • Attending team meetings and training sessions as required Specific duties are defined in the Description of Duties and Allocation of Hours form by the instructor in charge of the course. Please note duties are performed in person at the UTSC campus. Minimum Qualifications Applicants must demonstrate the following: • Strong knowledge of the subject matter • Academic qualifications: Applicants must (a) hold a Bachelor's degree in a health-related discipline and (b) be currently enrolled in a graduate-level (Master's or Doctoral) program in a health-related discipline. Strong academic preparation in health studies is required, including appropriate background knowledge in the relevant subject or specialty. • Ability to: o Provide clear, constructive, and timely feedback that supports student learning and development o Communicate professionally and responsively with instructors, teaching team members, and students o Uphold a professional standard of conduct befitting an academic environment, including punctuality, reliable attendance, and a demeanor that models expectations for students o Maintain accuracy and consistency when grading and handling course materials o Manage time effectively and meet strict deadlines in a high-volume academic environment • Technical proficiency: o Quercus or equivalent learning management system o Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint • Other requirements: o Excellent written and oral communication skills in English o Strong attention to detail and organizational skills o Ability to uphold academic integrity and confidentiality Preferred Qualifications Preference may be given to applicants who demonstrate: • Advanced knowledge of: o The bio-social dimensions of child health and development, including genetics and prenatal development, growth trajectories across childhood, common childhood diseases, immune system development, and the role of nutrition in early years health. • Academic qualifications: o Multiple courses completed as an undergraduate or graduate student in the subject area; previously taken this course or a similar course o Graduate-level training or specialization in child health, developmental biology, public health, nutrition, pediatrics, kinesiology, or a closely related health or life-science field. • Previous experience in: o Grading or TA work in child development, biology, or public health courses; experience in a clinical, research, or community setting involving children’s health; or supporting courses that integrate biological and social dimensions of development. • Demonstrated strengths in: o Explaining biological and social concepts of child development clearly to undergraduate students; facilitating discussion of the interplay between genetics, environment, disease, and nutrition in early life; providing constructive feedback on written and scientific work. • Other assets: o Familiarity with childhood immunization programs, pediatric health data, or developmental screening tools; experience supporting students in understanding how early-life factors shape long-term health outcomes. Relevant CriterionPrevious experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.
