Contract Academic Staff (CAS) Course Based Contract Opportunities, Mathematics & Computer Science, Faculty of Science 2026-27

The Department of Math & Computer Science is seeking Contract Academic Staff to teach the following in-person courses during the 2026 – 2027 academic year. Seven courses will be at the Brandon University campus in Brandon; one course will be at the Winnipeg campus.
Fall Term: Classes run from September 9 to December 11, 2026, with an exam period following.
Winter Term: Classes run from January 5 to April 9, 2027, with an exam period following.
FIRST TERM (Fall term):
62:171 Introduction to Statistics, Course: 3 credit hours
Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, mean, variance, the normal distribution, probability theory, populations and samples, sampling distributions. Introduction to estimation and tests of hypotheses, and simple linear regression.
Fall Term, Slot 3 – Mon/Wed/Fri 10:40 – 11:30
62:171 Introduction to Statistics, Course: 3 credit hours ; Laboratory: 1.5 credit hours – WINNIPEG
at the Brandon University Department of Psychiatric Nursing site located in the Rice Centre 491 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg.
Descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, mean, variance, the normal distribution, probability theory, populations and samples, sampling distributions. Introduction to estimation and tests of hypotheses, and simple linear regression.
Fall Term, 10:40 – 12:00 on Mondays and Fridays; Laboratory Thursday 13:00 – 15:00
SECOND TERM (Winter term) :
62:152 Contemporary Mathematics, Course: 3 credit hours ; Laboratory: 1 credit hour
Topics include sets, bases, number systems, inequalities, absolute values, modular arithmetic, field axioms, functions, geometry, measurement, statistics, and probability.
Winter Term, Slot 4 – Mon/Wed/Fri 11:40 – 12:30; Laboratory Tuesday 13:40 pm—15:30 pm
62:171 Introduction to Statistics, 3 credit hours

Winter Term, Slot 3 – Mon/Wed/Fri 10:40 – 11:30

62:172 Introduction to Statistical Inference, 3 credit hours
A continuation of 62 :171. Estimation, hypothesis testing, two-sample tests, tests for goodness of fit, contingency tables, regression and correlation, analysis of variance, and non-parametric statistics.
Winter Term, Slot 3 – Mon/Wed/Fri 10:40 – 11:30
62:182 Linear Algebra I, 3 credit hours
Systems of linear equations, matrices and elementary matrix operations, matrix inverse, trace, determinants, vectors, linear combinations including linear dependence and independence, vector spaces and subspaces, including nullspace and rank, bases, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, dot product, norm, cross product and linear mappings in n-dimensional space.
Winter Term, Slot 4 – Mon/Wed/Fri 11:40 – 12:30
62:191 Calculus II, 3 credit hours
A continuation of 62 :181 Calculus I, with more advanced techniques of problem solving. This includes calculus of trigonometric, exponential, and logarithmic functions, and techniques of integration.
Winter Term, Slot 2 – Mon/Wed/Fri 09:30 – 10:20
62:252 Applied Linear Algebra, 3 credit hours
A continuation of 62 :182. Linear algebra at a deeper level, graphs as matrices (electrical networks, adjacency matrices, incidence matrices), determinants and the geometry of vectors, the Gram-Schmidt algorithm, linear transformations including reflections, rotations, shears, and compressions, diagonalization, applications of diagonalization including Markov processes, important classes of matices such as symmetric (hermitian) and orthogonal (unitary) matrices.
Winter Term, Slot 4 – Mon/Wed/Fri 11:40 – 12:30
Qualifications: A Ph.D. in mathematics or statistics is preferred; a Masters’ Degree in mathematics, statistics, or a closely related discipline is required. Applicants must have successful teaching experience and relevant expertise in the specified area. Applicants may seek to establish an experiential/traditional equivalency to the Masters’ degree and are invited to contact the Chair of the Selection Committee at the address below on how to establish equivalent academic or professional credentials.
Salary: $8,132.00 per 3 credit hour course
