Project Engineer

Responsibilities

• Assisting in developing and accepting responsibility for project work packages involving design, construction, commissioning, and facility decommissioning activities.
• Providing technical direction and engineering oversight to support multi‑disciplinary projects.
• Preparing and reviewing technical work scopes, specifications, and engineering documentation.
• Identifying, assessing, and initiating changes to approved designs and construction work scope.
• Assessing equipment selection options and providing recommendations to support project execution.
• Supporting and implementing the project quality assurance plan.
• Conducting field walk‑downs to verify design parameters, construction progress, and operational readiness.
• Representing Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL) professionally and liaising with external consultants and contractors.
• Staying current with industry best practices, regulatory requirements, and emerging technologies.
• Maintaining up‑to‑date safety and operational training as required.
• Taking personal accountability for maintaining technical skills, professional certifications, and continuous learning.
• Sharing knowledge with peers and contributing to team learning and development.
• Identifying and reporting potential safety hazards and adhering to all required personal protective equipment and safety practices.
• Following Workplace Safety and Health procedures, WHMIS, and safe work standards while encouraging safe behaviour among colleagues.
• Other duties as assigned by your manager.

Qualifications

• Education:
  • Bachelor's (Honours) degree in Engineering or Science from a recognized university.
  • Must be a member, or eligible for membership, with Engineers Geoscientists of Manitoba (EGM) as a Registered Professional Engineer.
• Experience:
  • 10+ years of experience in the nuclear industry, ideally in waste management, decommissioning, or processing systems.
  • Strong knowledge of the National Building Code, National Fire Code, and applicable standards used in nuclear and non‑nuclear facility design, construction, and decommissioning.
  • Experience with nuclear decommissioning activities and industry‑standard methods.
  • Technical expertise in remote tooling and remote operations.
  • Experience resolving complex technical challenges at both strategic and execution levels.
  • Strong written communication skills, with a proven ability to produce high‑quality technical documents.
  • Experience providing technical leadership to professional and technical staff.
• Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Demonstrated strong judgment and decision‑making skills in technical matters.
  • Excellent oral and written English communication skills.
  • Effective team leadership and team‑building capabilities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team and communicate across all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated strong planning and prioritization abilities to meet deadlines.
  • Knowledge of engineering codes and standards used in the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of nuclear facilities.
  • Knowledge of technical methods and resources required for commissioning activities.
• Security Clearance Eligibility Required
  • Reliability Status with Site Access Security Clearance (SASC), which has a minimum requirement of 3-5 years of verifiable history in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and/or the United Kingdom.

Working Conditions

• Working schedule: We have a compressed work week: Four (4) days per week, ten (10) hours per day for a forty (40) hour work week, starting at 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
• Hearing protection is required for occasional visits to noisy construction/demolition environments.
• Walking and navigating a construction and demolition environment with required personal protective equipment (safety boots, hard hats, safety glasses and reflective clothing).

Location

Onsite near Pinawa, Manitoba, at the Whiteshell site. The area offers a peaceful, close‑knit community atmosphere, ideal for those who enjoy nature, recreation, and a balanced lifestyle. This is a fully onsite position at the Whiteshell site, Manitoba.
