Job description

SYSTRA Canada is part of the SYSTRA group, an international consulting and engineering group that is a world leader in the design of transport infrastructures. SYSTRA Canada focuses on providing transportation solutions for passengers and goods, including feasibility studies, capacity enhancement, and privatization of railway assets.

Context

Reporting to the Design Manager of each respective station (with a technical reporting relationship to the Systemwide Lead), the Engineer will provide design services, coordination, and delivery of their station discipline work package within the Co‑Development Phase of the ALTO high‑speed rail programme. The Engineer is responsible for overseeing the planning, design, and integration of their discipline and the station, ensuring alignment with programme objectives, operational requirements, regulatory frameworks, and lifecycle performance targets.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership, Design and Governance
    • Support and uphold the overall Stations Development Strategy across all project phases (concept to commissioning).
    • Implement the Station Development Plan, ensuring adherence to design strategy, programme milestones, design maturity, interface and integration strategy, and risk management.
    • Enforce disciplinary technical governance frameworks, including preparation of design drawings, reports, specifications, review processes (30/70/90/IFC), team leadership, change control, design assurance, and escalation procedures.
    • Align discipline design with programme objectives, funding constraints, concept of operations, passenger experience, and sustainability and climate resilience objectives.
  • Programme‑Level Interface Management
    • Collaborate with the Station Design Manager to manage interfaces between the station and key programme components.
    • Work with the Systemwide Engineer to implement consistent interface solutions across the overall framework.
  • Stakeholder and Authority Management
    • Support the Station Design Manager with discipline input for station engagement with federal, provincial, and municipal authorities, Transport Canada, regulatory bodies, utility providers, and urban planning stakeholders.
    • Prepare discipline materials for permitting and approvals, ensuring compliance with Canadian codes and standards.
  • Passenger Experience and Operational Integration
    • Align engineering discipline with the overall passenger experience strategy, delivering efficient passenger flows, safe platform operations, seamless multimodal integration, high‑quality user experience, and universal design compliance.
    • Integrate capacity study outputs, operational requirements, commercial and retail strategies.
    • Ensure discipline design accommodates contextual adaptation while meeting design principles.
  • Risk, Cost, and Performance Management
    • Input disciplinary risks to the overall station programme, including design risks, constructability challenges, interface and integration risks, regulatory risks, and stakeholder constraints.
    • Participate in value engineering and optimization strategies at the discipline and station level.
    • Align discipline scope with programme budget, schedule, and performance targets, monitoring discipline performance and ensuring quality and consistency.
  • Procurement and Delivery Strategy
    • Support the procurement strategy for station packages by providing drawings, reports, technical and performance specifications.
    • Ensure coherence of station packages across interfaces and disciplines.
  • Construction and Delivery Oversight
    • Provide executive technical oversight for constructability.
    • Maintain design intent through delivery and resolve major technical issues and interface conflicts.
    • Oversee readiness for commissioning, handover, and operational integration.

Profile and Skills

  • Experience & Technical Competencies
    • Accredited degree in Engineering or related discipline.
    • Professional Engineer (P.Eng. OIQ or equivalent) or eligibility in Canada.
    • Bilingual (English/French) preferred.
    • 10+ years of experience in major infrastructure or transportation projects.
    • Experience in rail, metro, or high‑speed rail station design and delivery.
    • Experience in complex, highly regulated environments.
    • Experience with Alliance, PPP, or Design‑Build delivery models.
    • Experience integrating new infrastructure with existing (brownfield) systems.
  • Technical Expertise
    • Strategic understanding of large‑scale transportation architecture and station planning.
    • Competence in construction documents, specifications, structural and complex building systems, MEP and building systems integration, fire/life safety, code compliance, passenger flow and operational modeling, multimodal integration, urban connectivity, sustainability and climate resilience, BIM and digital engineering integration, interface management, risk management, and configuration control.
    • Strong understanding of integration between stations and rail systems, civil infrastructure and utilities, operations and maintenance requirements, and safety, security, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Soft Skills
    • Strategic thinking and vision.
    • Strong decision‑making and accountability.
    • Ability to synthesize complex multidisciplinary inputs.
    • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement.
    • Leadership and coaching of design team members.
    • Negotiation and conflict resolution.
