We are currently seeking a Specialist Engineer who specializes in the design of CANDU Reactor Structures (i.e., pressure vessel, calandria vessel, end shields, reactor supports, etc.), providing strategic technical leadership, defining engineering approaches, and serving as a primary technical interface with organizations inside and outside the company on complex, large‑scale refurbishment and new build nuclear projects.

Your role

  • Devises and champions new approaches to complex or novel problems within the engineering specialty.
  • Leads the resolution of critical and high‑risk engineering issues, providing timely, and defensible engineering solutions/direction.
  • Addresses complex engineering challenges involving conflicting requirements, non‑standard materials, and difficult coordination constraints, establishing technically sound resolutions.
  • Evaluates and confirms the feasibility, robustness, and technical soundness of proposed engineering methods and approaches.
  • Apply extensive knowledge of engineering precedents and related disciplines to establish technical judgement and direction.
  • Provides guidance on applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements related to the discipline.
  • Performs critical reviews of design documents, calculations, drawings, and analysis reports, resolving complex or precedent‑setting technical issues.
  • Review engineering assessments for the design and integrity of nuclear pressure boundary components.
  • Review design documentation to ensure client requirements are met and initiate any corrective actions as necessary.
  • Support technical and commercial interfaces with the client.
  • Define work scope, plan activities, and coordinate engineering work for all design phases within major projects or across projects of considerable scope and complexity.
  • Support and guide the execution of technical engineering work packages to deliver within approved scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Is responsible for reporting technical progress, risks and schedule status to technical and project management.
  • Contributes to engineering budgets and provides technical input for defined work packages.
  • Participates in development, interpretation, and advancement of engineering standards and contributes to technical forums within the area of specialty.
  • Contributes technical input to operational and strategic planning processes, influencing engineering direction and resource deployment.
  • Participate in the training and development of engineering staff.
  • Operates with minimal technical supervision, receiving guidance primarily on overall objectives, and critical issues.

About You

  • A Bachelor'S or Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering (or related discipline such as Materials or Nuclear Engineering) from a university of recognized standing.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario.
  • Minimum 15 years of related work experience with CANDU reactor design and/or ASME pressure vessel design.
  • Experienced in producing drawings (including dimensioning and tolerancing). Knowledge of GD&T's preferred.
  • Experience in classical stress calculation. Knowledge of first principles related to solid mechanics such as relationship between stress and strain, material properties, fatigue, fracture mechanics, creep.
  • Familiarity with ASME Section III pressure boundary design and CSA N285.0.
  • Familiarity with AtkinsRéalis/Candu Energy Quality Assurance programs and processes and procedures.
  • Knowledge of CANDU calandria vessel design is preferred.
  • Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate problem‑solving skills.
