Corporate Legal Counsel

About Dillon

Dillon Consulting Limited is a proudly Canadian, 100% employee-owned professional consulting firm specializing in planning, engineering, environmental science, and management. We partner with clients to deliver thoughtful, collaborative, and innovative solutions to complex, multi-faceted projects that shape infrastructure, protect the environment, and support thriving communities across Canada.

With more than 1,100 professionals across 25+ offices nationwide, Dillon brings deep technical expertise and a strong culture of collaboration to every project. For over 75 years, we have remained committed to delivering high-quality, sustainable outcomes for our clients and the communities we serve. Our dedication to excellence has earned us recognition as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies for 19 consecutive years.

Why Choose Us: Where You Can Lead, Innovate, and Grow as an Employee-Owner

At Dillon, being an employee-owner means helping shape the firm's future while making a meaningful impact. You will provide support to Dillon's team as they take on complex projects, strengthen client relationships, and identify opportunities to leverage emerging technologies, including digital and AI-enabled solutions. With an owner’s mindset, you will help build agile, forward-thinking teams that contribute to Dillon’s long-term growth.

In addition to a competitive base salary, our ownership model links the firm’s performance to your personal financial growth through annual profit sharing and equity participation.

Your Opportunity: Own the Future of Consulting

Join our multidisciplinary team of professionals and work on impactful projects while delivering a fully integrated and exceptional client experience. As an employee-owner, you will have the flexibility to shape your career path, whether you choose to pursue a technical or management trajectory. As a trusted employee, you will have access to firm-wide performance insights and opportunities to influence our strategic direction through internal initiatives.

This is an existing position and can be based at any one of our following offices: London, Chatham, Windsor, Kitchener, Guelph and Hamilton.

We offer flexible work hours and hybrid work arrangement options to help balance the competing demands of work and personal life.

Responsibilities

Strategic Legal Advice & Project Delivery

  • Provide expert legal advice on different types of project delivery modes, including standard design-build and alternative delivery approaches such as Progressive Design-Build, P3, and Alliance frameworks.
  • Lead the legal review and negotiation of consulting and construction contracts, subcontracts, and other legal documents.
  • Act in an advisory capacity, making recommendations that have an important bearing on the conduct of the organization’s business and risk management.
  • Provide legal/commercial advice to project management teams throughout the complete project life cycle, from bid through to execution and closeout.
  • Identify and manage legal and commercial risks in new business lines and develop proactive mitigation strategies.

Claims & Regulatory Compliance

  • Work with management to resolve pre-litigation disputes and developing settlement strategies for project-level claims, including lien claims and accounts receivable collections.
  • Supervise and manage external counsel and litigation budgets to maximize quality and cost-effectiveness.
  • Provide technical guidance on Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) matters, "Constructor" designations, and statutory compliance for multidisciplinary service lines.
  • Advise on the protection of intellectual property and IP licensing matters.

Operational Excellence & Process Development

  • Take leadership on department projects and drive continuous improvement within the legal function.
  • Identify and implement ways to improve legal department efficiencies, particularly where legal overlaps with other corporate functions like HR, Finance, and IT.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (JD) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B).
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario (or eligible to register).
  • Minimum of 6+ years of experience practicing Law.
  • A background providing in-house services for the professional consulting, engineering, or construction sectors would be considered an asset.

Experience

  • Demonstrated success in leading legal aspects of multidisciplinary project teams and driving growth.
  • Deep knowledge of consulting and construction industry practices, procurement methodologies, and risk profile norms.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to act as a pragmatic, solutions-focused business partner to senior management and technical staff.

Compensation

$110,000 to $160,000

At Dillon, we believe in transparency. The following salary range is what we expect to offer for this position. It will be dependent on the successful applicant’s education, experience, and skills, in addition to internal equity and geographic region.
