Job Summary
Under the direction of the Charge Electrician Facilities performs electrical installations maintenance and repairs on related buildings systems and equipment in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code BC Fire Code and BC Building Code. Maintains electrical inventory recommends system and equipment upgrades and replacements and performs other related duties as required to ensure the campus remains operational 24 hours a day seven days a week.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Charge Electrician. Maintaining effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external groups including UBC faculties staff and administrative departments other institutions external agencies advisory committees professional associations and community organizations.

Work Performed

1. Provides complex electrical service and repairs essential to UBC by:

• Installing repairing troubleshooting and maintaining specialized and highly technical electrical distribution systems motor control centers switch gear fire systems lighting systems appliances electric motors and related control systems requiring significant periods of concentration throughout the day.
• Performing scheduled preventative maintenance.
• Planning large-scale projects and preparing material lists.
• Maintaining the campus fire systems operation maintenance troubleshooting testing verifying and maintaining accurate records in accordance with the current CAN/ULC NFPA and the Kelowna Fire Department. This individual will be required to respond to emergency incidents related to electrical and fire systems.
• Planning and coordinating campus-wide fire inspections and drills.
• Responsible for maintaining and testing chemical fire suppression systems on campus as well as building fire sprinkler systems.
• Maintaining exit signs and emergency lighting.
• Recommending equipment and systems upgrading and maintaining electrical inventory.
• Performing emergency and standby duties as required.
• Minor cleaning of mechanical areas.
• Arranges and communicates with external contractors regarding complex projects on a regular basis.

2. Responsible for administrative functions such as:

• Keeping and maintaining necessary administrative and systems records such as log books records and tool inventories.
• Responsible for holding a p-card and completing monthly reconciliations.

3. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Failure to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods such as lock-out procedures could result in significant safety hazards to the campus community and co-workers. Campus community safety would be compromised. It could also cause a backlog in the workload and delays in critical business functions. Poor judgement could result in injury to staff students and faculty reduced service to the University and its staff as well as significant financial repercussions.

Supervision Received
Reports to the Charge Electrician for all daily supervision and scheduling of assignments. Under the general direction of the Manager Operations & Utilities.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school graduation or equivalent plus completion of trades training to journeyman status. Over six (6) years progressive related experience.
• Willingness to respect diverse perspectives including perspectives in conflict with ones own.

Preferred Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of the National Electrical code as well as electrical lockout-tag out procedures per OSHA guidelines and electrical safety practices and procedures.
• Ability to resolve instrument VFD control circuit and electrical discipline technical issues and interpret blueprints schematics and specifications.
• Basic computer skills in MS Word Excel and Outlook are required.
• Ability to perform strenuous physical work including ability to lift 50 lbs on a frequent basis.
• Proven ability to operate hand and power tools and equipment work in confined areas withstand heights and/or long periods of bending and working in extreme climate conditions on a continuous basis.
• Ability to work flexible hours and/or shifts.
• Must be a team player able to work cooperatively with employees vendors and the public.
• Ability to recognize and report hazards and apply safe work methods while completing tasks in a timely manner and within budget.
• Valid Class 5 Drivers License required.
