Job description

Position Summary

Applications are invited from qualified individuals to instruct in the Access to Practical Nursing Diploma program at the North Island College Comox Valley campus.

The sessional Instructor/Learning Centre Coordinator, up to 45%, is a key member of the APN program team. The Instructor component of the role includes teaching the lab course PNS 106: Integrated Nursing Practice Access. The Learning Centre Coordinator component provides leadership for the APN Learning Centre, including overseeing day‑to‑day operations; advancing simulation‑based curriculum and faculty development; and designing, implementing, and coordinating teaching plans in collaboration with program faculty. The position works in consultation with other NIC health programs and may support collaborative initiatives to further develop simulation capacity across health disciplines.The successful candidate will implement creative strategies in the preparation and delivery of lab activities; use initiative in providing documentation and follow-up with regard to student concerns and problem resolution; and bring facilitation skills to management of conflict. The schedule for this assignment will be flexible to meet the needs of the program.
The teaching faculty of North Island College are responsible for implementing the College’s vision, goals, and objectives as they relate to teaching and learning. To carry out their teaching assignments, faculty use organizational skills, relational skills, and their knowledge of subject matter, pedagogy, and curricular design. In addition, they have a responsibility to serve as role models for students and colleagues.

The responsibilities and typical duties listed below constitute a generic job description for teaching faculty whose responsibility may be for the delivery of scheduled classes, the support of self-paced, on-line, and distance courses, and/or instruction and supervision in laboratories, practicums, etc.: Position Competencies - Creates a Positive Climate and Culture;

- To plan and prepare learning materials for instructional environments;
- To use a variety of approaches and materials, as appropriate, in order to address different learning needs;
- To teach in assigned subject areas and to include in courses, and in course outlines, all required subject matter or skill activity;
- To direct student learning in a positive, supportive, and caring environment;
- To be available to students regularly during scheduled office hours and classroom hours, to discuss their progress and other issues that influence their learning. (30 hours/wk.) (See Policy #3-03: Faculty Absence from Class – Cancellation of Classes);
- To clearly communicate in writing learning outcomes for programs and courses, and the way in which learners will be evaluated against those outcomes;
- To design and conduct evaluations or appraisals of students and to keep students informed of their progress;
- To submit grades in a timely manner, in accordance with Policy 4-15, Reporting Final Grades;
- To maintain records of student enrollment and achievement and other records required by the College and affiliated agencies. At the end of employment with the College, to submit marks and student records to the department Chair.

2.0 TYPICAL PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF INSTRUCTIONAL FACULTY
- To be aware of, and to work within, College educational policies;
- To be aware of the Education and Strategic plans and to contribute to their development and assist in the achievement of its goals and objectives;
- To advise the Department Chair, within a reasonable time frame, of items that need to be ordered so that inventories of books, supplies, and equipment are adequate for the courses taught;
- To advise the Department Chair regarding enrollment management (recruitment and retention) strategies for their areas of responsibility;
- To advise the Department Chair responsible, and the appropriate Administrator and/or Campus Health and Safety Committee, of any health and safety concerns and to assist, where possible, in rectifying the problem;
-To demonstrate knowledge of computer applications appropriate to the teaching environment;
- To maintain continuous professional development of competencies and qualifications as required in the appropriate discipline;
- To participate actively as a contributing member of the College community on College committees and other College-wide activities, where appropriate;
- To participate in department meetings and other department activities during normal working hours, when possible;
- To undertake other related responsibilities and duties which may be assigned by the College when course load permits.

3.0 LEARNING CENTRE COORDINATOR − Collaborates with the APN department to maintain a safe, operational and learner-friendly environment in the Health Lab.− Collaborates with the APN department faculty to develop and coordinate “best informed practice” experiential learning activities and course materials in keeping with the provincial APN/PN curriculum blueprint and acts as instructional facilitator for the new skills framework.− Provides ongoing mentorship, support and guidance to faculty and students in using simulation learning technologies.− Participates in faculty development and mentoring related to current and emerging simulation education strategies.− Ensures operation of and faculty orientation to the Health Lab operations and equipment as well as ensuring consistency within courses and continuity across the APN program for Health Lab sections.− Assists with and/or directs set up in collaboration with the Learning Centre Support Assistant for weekly Health Lab experiences.− Provides instructional support to faculty in developing Health Lab experiences.− Conducts timely remedial skill acquisition activities in consultation with course instructors and/or student self-referral.− Coordinates scheduling and external booking of the Health Lab.− Assess suitability of new equipment through research, on-site testing, and off-site evaluations of equipment used at other centres.− Meets with equipment suppliers to discuss and evaluate new equipment as it comes to market.− Coordinates with Learning Centre Support Assistant purchasing of supplies necessary for the day-to-day operations of the Health Lab.− Coordinates purchase, receiving, and cataloguing of supplies necessary for the day-to-day operations of the Health Labs.− Collaborates with the HHS Dean, Associate Dean, and/or Senior Administrative Specialist on Learning Centre supplies budget and monitors expenditures to be within budget.− Projects future needs in consultation with Dean, Associate Dean, and/or Senior Administrative Specialist to support the Capital budget process for the Health Lab.− Coordinates with the BSN Learning Centre Coordinator equipment utilization, maintenance and purchasing of supplies necessary for the day-to-day operations of the Health Lab and maintains inventory.− Collaborates with the Learning Centre Support Assistant to maintain the inventory of a broad range of resource materials and supplies including inventory database for the APN Health Labs.− Collaborates with the BSN Learning Centre Coordinator to develop and maintain policies, procedures and practices governing the operation of the Health Lab.− Maintains and makes available current documentation (policies, forms etc.) from practice agencies for students’ Health Lab experiences.− Contributes to APN program internal and external reporting requirements.− Creates simulation activities and events across the APN department and works with faculty and Learning Centre Coordinators across the HHS Faculty for interdepartmental simulation and events.− When time permits, conducts timely remedial skill acquisition activities in consultation with course instructors and/or student self-referral.− Liaises with Student Health Lab Monitors utilizing space for the Student Health Lab Monitor open lab, as needed. Required Education & Experience - A current practising license as an LPN, NP, RN or RPN with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM). Faculty who are not licensed by BCCNM may be considered if they have equivalent education and experience.
- One of the following credentials in adult education from an accredited post-secondary institution:
  • Provincial Instructor Diploma (PID) (those in progress must have an identified completion date).
  • A formal educationalequivalent to a PID. Those is progress must have an identified completion date.
  • Proof of completion of a formal Prior Learning Assessment (PLA) conducted by the hiring institution to ensure teaching competencies.
- Credential in Adult Education, equivalent, or in progress from an accredited post-secondary institution.
- A minimum of three years’ full-time practice experience (within the last five years) as an RN, RPN, or LPN.
- Current registration with BCCNM (inclusive of Criminal Record).
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support). Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of BC Practical Nursing curriculum and scope of practice would be an asset.
  • Experience or interest with Indigenous health and/or global health.
  • Experience using a variety of creative and motivating approaches to stimulate learning within a distributed teaching-learning environment and classroom is an asset.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective team behaviours, support cooperative and effective working relationships, and contribute to shared team goals.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to plan and prioritize and efficiently meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Experience with and willingness to learn, online learning management systems, i.e. D2L Brightspace, Teams.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer applications, the internet, and with MS Office software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams.
  • Valid BC driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required.
