Your opportunity:

As a member of a dynamic team, you will draw on your strong leadership skills to supervise the day-to-day work of the Disability Consultant Team at the University of Toronto Scarborough. You will provide leadership in case management related to academic accommodations for students with disabilities, assign new intakes to members of the team, and offer consultation and guidance on complex accommodations and support needs. You will be responsible for training new Disability Consultants and contributing to the development and refinement of practices, procedures and processes to ensure the effective delivery of accessible services and supports within AccessAbility Services.

In your role as Team Lead, you will also manage your own caseload of undergraduate and graduate students with complex needs and disabilities with a particular focus on mental health and co-morbid conditions. Using a holistic and student-centered approach, you will work with an ethno-culturally and academically diverse student population to assess students' needs; ensure appropriate documentation has been received and reviewed; assess confidential medical and psychological documentation; follow up with medical professionals for clarification or additional information; and develop, recommend and implement individualized accommodations and strategies based on students' disabilities. You will monitor, evaluate and modify existing accommodations, support students in self-assessment, and facilitate referrals while ensuring appropriate documentation is forwarded.

You will collaborate closely with faculty and staff to determine effective accommodations in complex situations, balancing academic integrity, due process and responsible cost management. This role also involves frequent collaboration with Student Crisis Response & Academic Progress Case Coordinators, the Student Welfare Case Coordinator, , UTSC academic departments, the UTSC Office of the Registrar and units within the Office of Student Experience and Wellbeing to provide student accommodations and academic supports. In addition, you will participate in meetings and deliver presentations both within and outside the University to promote awareness of the work of AccessAbility Services and the needs of students with disabilities, while contributing to effective communication strategies for students, faculty and staff.



Your responsibilities will include:

  • Overseeing day-to-day operational needs and service delivery requirements of programs
  • Directing the activities of a group of staff-appointed employees all performing a similar function (including planning and implementing workflow for a group).
  • Providing case management support to students requiring the coordination of multiple services
  • Developing accommodation plans for students based on their learning profile and documentation
  • Facilitating psychoeducational workshops that promote the development of coping strategies and skills
  • Developing and implementing academic and/or social skill building programs independently
  • Counselling students on health issues related to their learning and the effects of their disability
  • Responding to escalated complaints using informal negotiating skills

Essential Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Counselling, Education and/or a relevant disability-related field such as rehabilitation services, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five (5) years of related case management experience working with adults with complex mental health needs with co-morbid conditions, including extensive experience assessing risk and managing mental health crises
  • Minimum three (3) years of experience developing, implementing and monitoring accommodations for persons with mental health disabilities, with co-morbid conditions
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience leading and supervising a team, directing the work of others, facilitating team meetings, providing orientation and job-related training, planning and implementing the workflow for the team and participating on recruitment panels
  • Demonstrated understanding of disability, ableism and student success issues in a post-secondary environment and ability to advise students in an academic context
  • Must have demonstrated expertise in developing, implementing and monitoring accommodations for academic programs for adults with a range of disabilities, with a high level of knowledge of mental health accommodations and supports
  • Must be able to communicate clearly and professionally both orally and in writing, including effectively delivering presentations
  • Must have the ability to negotiate complex situations and work in constantly evolving situations
  • Demonstrated ability to synthesize knowledge and display sound judgment, problem solving skills, attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
  • Must demonstrate superior organizational skills, and a proven ability to multi-task and work well under pressure in a fast paced environment with strict deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team environment with a commitment to being flexible, sensitive and creative
  • Must have sound knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act and their applications within post-secondary education
  • Excellent proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and data management systems
  • Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment. Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of the implications of intersectionality as it relates to a student’s success at university and in a broader context. Must also have an understanding of the strengths and challenges of adults with disabilities and have knowledge of cultural views of disability
