Nature of the work
The occupation of a Speech Therapist includes, in particular, the responsibility for carrying out prevention, screening, identification and evaluation of speech, language and hearing difficulties. The therapist is responsible for developing and implementing appropriate strategies and intervention plans with the aim to develop the students’ communication and language skills thereby supporting their continued educational progress
Some characteristic duties
The Speech Therapist detects and evaluates difficulties in speech, language, and hearing. His functions require him to establish close contacts with parents, teachers, administrators and other professionals or support staff working with the students.
He develops appropriate language intervention plans and provides recommendations for individual students or groups of students based on observations, screenings and/or evaluations. In his role he advises school teams on the implementation of prevention strategies, on recognising the signs and impacts of language difficulties and on implementing best practices and universal interventions.
In the execution of his tasks, he is called upon to participate in multidisciplinary meetings and to collaborate with other professionals within educational services to ensure a cohesive support to school teams.
Qualifications required
Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology
Member of the Ordre des orthophonistes et audiologistes du Québec or in the process of applying for membership
Fluency in English and have a strong working knowledge of French
