About Us

Building and maintaining our provincial infrastructure is no small job.

The Building Services Group at the Department of Public Works (PW) supports Nova Scotia’s 2,000 buildings and infrastructure assets across a wide range of clients. We maintain and support various government buildings and assets, including museums, core buildings and office buildings, correctional centres, and justice centres.

Without our Building Services staff’s proactive measures, equipment issues or failures could lead to an interruption of government services provided.

About Our Opportunity

As the Maintenance Planner, you are responsible for implementing a mandated, preventative, and predictive maintenance program for multiple pieces of equipment and infrastructure in government owned buildings and provincial properties.

We count on your industry expertise, along with your strong organization and planning abilities to keep our team on track; all the while striving to minimize unplanned downtime and identifying opportunities for improvement. You will work often with various other Public Works divisions to synchronize and share building equipment life cycle data, condition index, and maintenance history.

Primary Accountabilities

You provide essential support to the development and implementation of a 12-week maintenance schedule which will be utilized by our operations and maintenance staff. You will also be involved with:

  • Planning and developing work schedules and resources using the computerized maintenance management system (CMMS);
  • Co-ordinating and scheduling Preventive and Reactive maintenance;
  • Managing backlog in CMMS by conducting analysis and recommending solutions to the Maintenance Planning Specialist; and
  • Monitoring and reporting on condition trends of building mechanical, electrical, and architectural components.

Qualifications and Experience

High School completion plus four (4) years of related work experience in the facilities maintenance management field. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered.

As the ideal candidate you demonstrate:

  • knowledge of building construction and maintenance including, but not limited to, architectural, electrical and mechanical systems/components;
  • experience utilizing computers, web-based databases, applications, and planning software; and
  • proficiency working with Microsoft Suite.

Though not required, it is considered an asset if you have an understanding of government procurement policy and tendering procedures and have basic knowledge of budgets and project management principles. In addition, familiarity with SAP, database management, and Primavera and/or Microsoft Project are considered assets.

As the future Maintenance Planner, you are known for your sound judgement and strong initiative. You diligently meet your goals, clearly define and achieve priorities, all the while coordinating a high volume of multiple tasks. You consistently demonstrate tact and diplomacy, along with strong attention to detail in your work. You also have well developed planning and organizational skills, coupled with an ability to multi-task and adapt in this fast-paced environment.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

An equivalent combination of training, education and experience will be considered. Related equivalencies may include, but are not limited to:

  • A related diploma and two (2) years of related experience in facility management.

Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.
