Primary function

Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) presents law students with an exceptional opportunity to embark on a diverse and fulfilling career in social justice. This position is 100% onsite at the location listed above. The successful candidate must be able to commute to the office and work in person on a full‑time basis.

Hiring Manager: Policy Director

Key accountabilities

•Conduct legal and policy research on statutes, regulations, case law, and emerging policy issues.
•Help prepare briefing notes, memos, and summaries for internal stakeholders on policy developments and legal implications.
•Support the drafting and review of policy papers, consultation submissions, and advocacy materials.
•Monitor government, regulatory, and industry updates; track developments and flag key risks and opportunities.
•Contribute to cross-functional projects by collaborating with legal, communications, and program teams.
•Maintain organized research files, databases, and trackers for policy issues and legislative developments.

Required skills & experience

• Enrolled in a recognized law school
• Proven dedication to social justice or public interest work
• Demonstrated interest in policy
• Exceptional written and oral communication abilities
• Strong interpersonal skills such as active listening, empathy, teamwork, conflict resolution,
patience, adaptability, networking and a positive attitude.
• Familiarity with Legal Aid Ontario's mission and services
• Ability to work independently, tackle complex issues, build relationships, and collaborate with teams
• Experience in serving marginalized populations, including racialized communities, youth, and individuals facing mental health or addiction issues, or homelessness
• French language proficiency is an asset
