Do you think you have the ability and drive to keep up with this exciting, ever-changing industry? Whether it be in front of the camera, on air, online or behind the scenes, you would be joining a team that thrives on making connections and telling stories that are important to Canadians.

We are looking for a skilled, enthusiastic and driven senior reporter to join our business team from August 2026 to end of July 2027.

You are someone who is passionate about business news and full of ideas about what stories to cover and how to best tell them. Whether the story involves trade disputes or the latest consumer trends, you understand the economic forces behind the news and can distill ideas into clear, compelling narratives in text, audio and video.

As a senior reporter, you will pitch original stories and move fast on breaking news. You have strong writing, research, and interviewing skills and work well in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment. You are confident and experienced going live (and at times unscripted) on social media, in live digital story pages, on television and on radio. You can do packed, on-demand pieces on all platforms.

You have a list of business sources and an understanding of how to pitch stories that will appeal to the young, diverse audience that is our target demographic. You are hungry to file.

We are asking that candidates have at least 10 years of relevant experience.

This job is 5 days a week, full-time, with an ability to work overtime or weekends as required.

The successful candidate could be based in Toronto or in Calgary but we would consider applicants from other parts of Canada if they can work at a CBC station that can operationally support live broadcast hits. This job cannot be done from home.

Here’s more details:

Key tasks:

  • Pitch stories on the economy, cost of living and challenges facing Canadian businesses and consumers.

  • Go live when the story demands it – and file into live story pages and live programming, including News Network, radio news and social media platforms. Do not hesitate to go out on location whenever possible.

  • Be comfortable covering major or fast-moving events such as tariff announcements, AI advancements, interest rate decisions, and consumer reports

  • Research, interview and gather new information

  • Pitch and shape stories with our target 30-49 diverse Canadian audience in mind. Drive to develop content that will be relevant to this demographic. Make business stories relatable to a general audience and explain the impact these stories have on people’s everyday lives.

  • Write scripts and file stories for both digital and broadcast platforms.

  • Generate and execute journalism that elevates a range of voices and perspectives

  • Work collaboratively with editors and vettors to sharpen writing, headlines and text.

  • Understand the elements needed to produce strong visual and audio stories.

  • Be able to remain calm under pressure.

  • Recognize issues of importance quickly and take effective action to ensure appropriate coverage.

  • Develop and maintain contacts with a variety of sources.

  • Have a strong understanding of legal journalistic issues and the ethical principles of our Journalistics Standards and Practices.

  • Work collaboratively with colleagues on the business team and other parts of the CBC.

Your profile:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

  • Minimum 10 years relevant full-time experience.

  • Excellent understanding of the economic, business, and consumer challenges.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the diversity within the business beat and the diversity of our target audience

  • Come with sources and contacts in the business community and beyond.

  • Experience writing, researching, fact-checking and packaging text, audio and video pieces.

  • Strong presentation skills; comfortable reporting live and unscripted.

  • Have deep familiarity with social media and have an ability to surface trending stories.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team and across departments.

  • Proven ability to work in a high-stress, tight-deadline environment.

  • Experience working on multiple projects simultaneously.

  • Ability to work flexible hours and do overtime as needed.

  • Knowledge of the public broadcaster's role, responsibilities and journalistic standards.

  • University degree in journalism or equivalent preferred.

Please include examples of your work (2 video stories, 2 audio stories, 2 text stories and 2 examples of live coverage) with your application. Skills testing could be required.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.

  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
