Job description

Congregation Tifereth Beth David Jerusalem (TBDJ) is seeking an accomplished and dynamic Executive Director to serve as a key leader within the synagogue. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will provide strategic and operational leadership, working closely with clergy, staff, and volunteers to transform vision into action and achieve the congregation's goals.

The successful candidate will be a positive, dynamic and people-focused leader with a “can-do” attitude. They will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of this vibrant synagogue community by strengthening organizational systems, optimizing resources, supporting and developing staff, and empowering its dedicated volunteers. Through strong leadership and sound management practices, the Executive Director will help ensure the congregation's continued growth, vitality, and long-term sustainability.

About TBDJ

TBDJ is one of Montreal's largest and most vibrant Modern Orthodox congregations, serving more than 500 member households. Located in Côte Saint-Luc, TBDJ is known for its strong sense of community, active volunteer leadership, diverse programming, and commitment to meaningful Jewish life across generations.

Guided by dedicated clergy, an engaged Board of Directors, and a passionate volunteer base, TBDJ is a dynamic and welcoming congregation that plays a central role in the lives of its members. TBDJ offers a unique environment where tradition and community engagement come together to strengthen Jewish life.

Primary Responsibilities

Organizational Leadership & Management

  • Provide strategic and operational leadership for all non-religious aspects of the synagogue, ensuring activities, resources, and priorities are aligned with the congregation's mission and objectives.
  • Mange, develop, and support a small staff team by establishing clear expectations, fostering accountability, and promoting a culture of collaboration and a service-based approach to congregants.
  • Evaluate organizational needs and implement improvements to staffing structures, systems, and processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

Volunteer & Community Engagement

  • Partner with volunteer leaders and committees to provide the guidance, coordination, and administrative support necessary to advance synagogue priorities and initiatives.
  • Help volunteers translate ideas into actionable plans by identifying solutions, coordinating resources, and ensuring appropriate organizational support is in place to move initiatives forward.
  • Foster strong engagement among volunteers and identify opportunities to strengthen participation.
  • Develop and support initiatives that enhance member engagement, retention, and satisfaction.
  • Promote and foster as a culture of hospitality, responsiveness, and service excellence with the team and throughout the synagogue.
  • Oversee the synagogue's financial operations, including budgeting, financial reporting, cash flow management, and financial controls.
  • Develop and implement systems that strengthen financial tracking, reporting and accountability.

Operations & Administration

  • Ensure the smooth and effective day-to-day operation of the synagogue, including administrative functions, facilities, technology, and member services.
  • Continuously assess and improve operational processes to enhance efficiency, service quality, and the overall congregational experience.
  • Oversee the effective use of technology and administrative systems to support organizational goals and improve workflow.
  • Oversee the maintenance, safety, security, and ongoing improvement of synagogue facilities.

  • An experienced manager with the ability to build, lead, motivate, and hold staff accountable while fostering a positive and supportive workplace culture.
  • A strong operator who can establish efficient systems, improve processes, and ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of the synagogue.
  • Skilled at building strong relationships and creating a welcoming, service-oriented experience for members, visitors, donors, and volunteers.
  • A trusted partner to volunteer leaders, capable of providing the structure, guidance, and support needed to help committees and volunteers achieve their goals.
  • An effective communicator who listens well, builds consensus, and navigates differing perspectives and personalities with professionalism and diplomacy.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience leading and developing staff, managing performance, and fostering a positive and collaborative workplace culture.
  • Experience working with Boards of Directors, committees, volunteers, or other stakeholder groups.
  • Strong financial management skills, including budgeting, financial oversight, reporting, and resource allocation.
  • Experience establishing and improving organizational systems, processes, and operational practices.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Experience overseeing facilities, administration, technology, or organizational operations is considered an asset.
  • Experience working within a synagogue, faith-based organization, membership-based organization, nonprofit, educational institution, or community organization is considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with Jewish communal life, synagogue governance, and volunteer-driven organizations is considered an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and the ability to communicate effectively in French.
  • A university degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  • Flexibility to work some evenings, weekends, and holidays in order to support synagogue services, programs, lifecycle events, and major community gatherings.
