Job Summary
Printing and Duplicating Services, a unit within the Division of Student Affairs, is dedicated to supporting the success of staff, faculty, students, and departments while delivering service excellence.
The Wide Format Operator plays a critical role in the Printing Services Blink Print satellite operation, working both independently and collaboratively to manage multiple priorities in a high-pressure environment. This position requires the ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, and the public, demonstrating tact, diplomacy, and sound judgment in person and over the phone. The Wide Format Operator must possess strong clerical and organizational skills, extensive knowledge of diverse printing and sign processes, and proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud to prepare files for production.
Reporting to the Manager, Printing Services, the Wide Format Operator Assistant is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Blink satellite wide format print shop located in the University Bookstore, operating with minimal oversight. Core responsibilities include producing high-quality wide format printing for the University community and the public using specialty printing, laminating, and plotting equipment, as well as managing projects through industry-standard MIS software.
Job Requirements
Experience:
This role requires a minimum of three (3) years of recent wide format experience in a print-oriented customer service, or similar setting, preferably in a post-secondary or institutional environment or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to interact and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Must be able to work independently while within a team structure with minimal supervision.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail.
- Ability to keep accurate records.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills to adjust and small repairs to printing and binding equipment.
- Ability to organize/prioritize workload and possess quick decision-making skills to withstand a high-pressure environment.
- Close visual acuity, accurate colour vision.
- Ability to manage cash and run point of sale and global payment machine.
- Must have working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite including, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign.
- Extensive knowledge of wide format media and industry standards.
- Knowledge of prepress and printing software applications and how to use them.
- Knowledge of duplicating and bindery processes.
Assets/Preferences:
- Working knowledge of PrintSmith Vision and Digital Storefront.
- Experience with UVic information systems.
