General Description of Class
Under general supervision performs routine activities of animal facility care, sanitizes laboratory animal caging, equipment and work areas.
Typical Duties
The following illustrative duties indicate the extent of skill and the level of responsibility involved in this job. They in no way limit the incumbent to the tasks indicated. Flexibility of the employee to perform a wide variety of functions is necessary in successfully fulfilling the requirements of this position. The degree to which each employee performs each of the following tasks listed below will vary according to where and when the employee is scheduled to work.
a) cleans and sanitizes animal laboratory areas: floors, walls and equipment and animal cages; responsible for the operation of the tunnel, rack and bottle wash machines, and autoclaves;
b) feeds animals according to schedule and in accordance with scheduled diet;
c) collects and removes soiled materials and equipment from animal areas and delivers to cleaning areas;
d) maintains and replaces soap in dispensers, air filters, paper towels, garbage and sharps containers;
e) wears personal protective equipment as appropriate;
f) prepares cages for use by animals by reloading with appropriate food and water;
g) properly disposes of dead animals and waste materials;
h) loads, unloads and stores food and bedding supplies from incoming vehicles and;
i) other related duties as required.
Minimum Requirements for Selection
Education: Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience: One year of related working experience.
Other: Physically capable of performing the required duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs. No history of animal-related allergies. Must be willing to participate in the University Health and Safety program, which includes the requirement to undergo an immunization program depending on the work environment. Ability to communicate effectively in English (oral and written). Ability to take direction and work independently. May be required to be in possession of a valid Provincial Class "G" driver's license. Ability to work weekends and holidays as required.

- There is no guarantee of hours. Hours could be half days or full days (e.g. 3 to 7.5 hours)
- This is a term position until January 2027
