Job description

Our client, a leader in the H&S field, is looking for a Health and Safety specialist to join their team on a contract basis in the Kitchener area.

Job Description

The Health and Safety Specialist provides complete, thorough, and professional health, safety, and environmental advice across assigned sites, regions, divisions, and corporate entities. This role delivers effective recommendations based on legislation, education, training, and industry best practices, while promoting a positive safety culture. The specialist continually anticipates and assesses health and safety hazards, ensuring risks are effectively eliminated or controlled, and supports management and employees in meeting all corporate and regulatory health and safety requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive health, safety, and environmental advice for assigned sites, regions, divisions, and corporate entities.
  • Develop and deliver effective recommendations based on applicable legislation, education, training, and industry best practices.
  • Promote and reinforce a positive safety culture across all levels of the organization.
  • Continually anticipate, identify, and assess workplace health and safety hazards to ensure risks are effectively eliminated or controlled.
  • Collaborate as a team member to assist and guide management and employees with compliance requirements under the corporate health and safety program, client safety programs, and governing Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Drive corrective actions to address identified hazards, non-conformances, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Initiate enhancements to health and safety systems, processes, and procedures to improve overall safety performance.
  • Facilitate and coordinate health and safety training to ensure workers and leaders understand their responsibilities and safe work practices.
  • Develop, write, and update health and safety policies, procedures, and related documentation.
  • Provide essential health and safety information and support during emergencies and incident responses.
  • Maintain accurate and complete safety program administrative records suitable for internal and external audit purposes.
  • Engage with workers and leaders in industrial environments, including complex process operations, to support safe work planning and execution.
  • Communicate proactively and constructively with site teams, acting as a collaborative partner rather than an enforcement-focused presence.
  • Support continuous improvement of safety performance in high-risk industrial operations such as wastewater, oil and gas, chemical, mining, and polymer facilities.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience in health and safety roles.
  • Experience working on industrial sites, including environments such as wastewater, oil and gas, chemical, mining, polymers, or other complex process operations.
  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations and standards, including Occupational Health and Safety requirements and OSHA-related practices.
  • Demonstrated experience in environmental, health, and safety (EHS) programs and safety training delivery.
  • NCSO (National Construction Safety Officer) designation.

Work Environment

This role operates in a highly regulated, high-risk industrial environment where safety is central to operations. The position follows a standard Monday to Friday schedule, working 5 days on site for a total of 40 hours per week. Approximately 80% of the work is performed at a desk, focusing on analysis, documentation, planning, and communication, while about 20% involves being on site within a refinery or similar industrial setting. The specialist will be exposed to complex process operations and robust safety systems, gaining hands-on experience in real-world field conditions. The environment emphasizes strong safety culture, best-in-class compliance standards, and close collaboration with operations teams to support safe and efficient work.
