Position summary

Under the supervision of the Director, Strategic Conservation and Innovation, and as a member of the Quebec Region GIS team, the geomatics coordinator will conduct various types of spatial analyses to support the Conservation Department’s work in the areas of acquisition and stewardship. He or she will contribute to the development of cartographic products and decision-support tools, in addition to providing support to the science, fundraising, and communications teams.

Key Responsibilities

1. Geomatics support for the conservation department - acquisition and stewardship (80%)

• Conduct spatial analyses for CNC’s priority landscapes and areas in southern Quebec;
• Develop decision-support tools, such as atlases for natural areas of conservation interest;
• Develop scripts to automate repetitive tasks;
• Contribute to the development of remote sensing tools for monitoring CNC properties;
• Develop geospatial data web services and interactive maps ;
• Generate various maps and statistics on land use, protected areas, and species for areas of interest in existing and potential conservation projects

2. Conduct spatial analyses for projects commissioned by external partners (30%)

• Contribute to project planning;

• Identify and conduct spatial analyses (ecological functions, services, and values; human pressures, etc.) at various scales;

• Prepare maps and statistics based on the results obtained;

• Document the analysis steps in methodological reports;

• Meet with partners to monitor projects

Position Requirements

• University degree or college diploma and at least 5 years professional experience in spatial analysis;
• Proficiency in the ESRI suite (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Survey123, Experience Builder) and in software (QGIS) and open-source datasets (open data);
• Experience in publishing and managing web services for geospatial data and mapping tools;
• Skills in Python programming (ArcPy), R, and automation (ModelBuilder);
• Knowledge of remote sensing tools (eCognition), ecological connectivity modeling tools (Circuitscape, Linkage Mapper), and spatial prioritization tools (Marxan, prioritizr in R)
• Excellent skills in cartography and relational databases;
• Proficiency in spatial analysis methods and decision-support tools as applied to environmental conservation and land-use planning issues
• Knowledge of natural habitats (wetlands, aquatic environments, forests, open areas) and sensitive species in Quebec;
• Problem-solving: decision-making skills, judgment, creativity;
• Ability to maintain good working relationships with colleagues at regional and national levels;
• Proactive: able to anticipate and plan for future needs;
• Flexibility of approach: adaptability to different people and priorities, ability to work independently and as part of a team;
• Rigor: excellent attention to detail and time management.
