Job description

Description

The Alberta Provincial Forester provides strategic direction for forest management across Alberta operations. This role represents the organization on provincial forest management matters and serves as a trusted advisor to Timberlands leadership, ensuring forest management systems, plans, and decisions are technically sound, defensible, and aligned with long‑term business objectives. This position will report into the Timberlands General Manager.

The role requires regular interaction with Edmonton‑based organizations, including government and industry partners. Approximately half of business‑related meetings occur in Edmonton, with remaining travel split across Timberlands offices in Grande Prairie, Edson, and Drayton Valley. This position is remote; however, preference will be given to candidates located in the Edmonton, Alberta area to support business needs. The ability to frequently travel and live in proximity to Edmonton is an important consideration. Building effective, trust‑based relationships across Alberta operations requires meaningful in‑person engagement.

What You Will Do

Strategic Leadership & Decision Support

  • Provide senior leadership on forest resource development to enable long‑term business strategy, Annual Allowable Cut (AAC) integrity, and regulatory compliance
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to Timberlands leadership, supporting decision‑making as forest management data, analyses, and business conditions evolve
  • Ensure integration of forest inventory, growth and yield (G&Y), tree improvement, and forest research into forest management systems and long‑term planning
  • Provide advisory leadership on Forest Management Plan (FMP) development and long‑term planning alignment

Collaboration & Influence

  • Build and maintain strong, trust‑based relationships with Timberlands teams, industry counterparts, and internal business partners
  • Influence senior leaders and cross‑functional teams through credible, balanced advice on forest management and fibre supply issues
  • Develop and sustain a broad internal support network across both Forest Management Agreements (FMAs), recognizing that success depends on collaboration

Operational & Financial Oversight

  • Work with tree improvement, forest inventory, growth and yield, and forest research teams to ensure alignment with fibre supply objectives
  • Help determine AAC strategy and support communication across Timberlands and Wood Products regarding current and future fibre supply
  • Lead development of land‑use objectives and represent organizational interests in subregional planning initiatives
  • Apply strong operational knowledge of Timberlands business functions, including harvest, haul, and planning, to respond effectively to complex and evolving challenges

Government, Indigenous & External Relations

  • Represent the organization on provincial forest management matters and ensure leaders are informed of, and able to influence, pending regulatory and policy changes
  • Work closely with the Alberta Forest Products Association (AFPA) to support engagement in provincial forest policy development and revision
  • Support Alberta Indigenous relations strategies in alignment with broader Canadian direction
  • In collaboration with the Sustainability Director, support and coordinate FRIAA and TDA programs and address emerging federal and provincial sustainability issues
  • Apply experience with Alberta wildlife and environmental policy, including caribou, grizzly bear, and cold‑water fish considerations

Qualifications

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Professional Forester (RPF) or Registered Professional Forest Technologist (RPFT) with the Alberta Association of Forest Management Professionals
  • 15+ years of experience, preferably with a significant portion in Alberta
  • Strong understanding of Alberta forest policy, regulatory frameworks, and government processes
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex, sensitive issues where credibility, trust, and collaboration are essential
  • Proven ability to build effective working relationships across government, industry, Indigenous organizations, and internal teams
  • Experience providing strategic advice and influencing senior leaders and external stakeholders

Preferred Experience

  • Experience in core operational roles, including harvest, haul, and operational or strategic planning
  • Operational or strategic silviculture background
  • Experience working in land use and/or oil and gas environments
