Job Summary

OVCARE is a world leading, dynamic and innovative research program that brings together diverse talent to advance gynecologic cancer research and improve health outcomes for patients. We are looking for a Technologist Lead, Gynecologic Cancer Tissue Bank Core for our state-of-the-art, custom lab in the heart of Vancouver. We believe that through a culture of team first, hard work and passion for innovative science we can tackle the most challenging scientific problems.

The successful candidate will play an instrumental role in leading activities of our biobank. We are looking for a self-motivated and creative problem solver who thrives in a fast-paced collaborative environment. A keen eye with an attention to detail is needed to ensure our researchers are well supported and for the smooth day-to-day operations of the biobank. You will be working together with a dynamic team, including laboratory technologists, clinical informatics and data scientists, on coordinating various biobanking services needs like tissue processing, data collection and management, upkeep of common lab spaces, and equipment maintenance.

Organizational Status
This position reports to OVCARE’s Gynaecological Tissue Biobank Director and works closely with other research technologists, data scientists, post-doctoral fellows, scientists and trainees, as well as with administrative and finance staff within OVCARE.

Work Performed
-Leads day-to-day wet lab operations of the biobank in collaboration with the Clinical Research Manager and Data Manager on overall biobank oversight

-Processes biological tissue, fluids, and study-specific samples for storage
-Maintains accurate records of biospecimen inventory, processing, and storage using the biobank’s online database platform, and performs routine data entry
-Fulfills internal and external researcher requests for biospecimens by performing look-ups, retrieving specimens, and preparing materials for release in accordance with approved request procedures.

-Identifies workflow improvements and collaborates with team members and lab users on implementation

-Maintains and updates SOPs; documents and evaluates best practices and contributes to SOP development
-Prepares cryostat and vibratome tissue sections
-Performs routine stains (e.g. H&E)
-Performs immunohistochemical stains of tissue sections.
-Conducts standard molecular biology techniques including DNA, RNA and protein extraction of tissues

-Performs routine maintenance on laboratory equipment; supports implementation of new equipment and provides training to team members on use

-Trains and orients co-op students on biobank technical procedures, protocols, and safety practices.

-Supports compliance with regulatory and ethical requirements including CTRNet ROPs, UBC REB, TCPS2, and applicable BC Cancer/PHSA policies

-Troubleshoots technical issues with established protocols and equipment
-Ensures common laboratory spaces are maintained to operational and safety standards

-Maintains consumable inventories for the biobank and common lab spaces

-Maintains a safe and productive work environment and lab facility, meeting regulatory requirements

-Performs other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of positions in this classification

Consequence of Error/Judgement
The applicant will be given a high degree of latitude and must be capable of excellent judgment, responsibility, and initiative in conducting research and ensuring the successful and timely completion of tasks. High-level decisions will be approved by supervisor. Failure to achieve this level of performance will jeopardize continued funding of research projects. Failure to meet goals may result in suspended funding and will negatively impact the ability to attract future funds.

Supervision Received
The incumbent is expected to independently organize and define daily activities, as well as to set and plan to achieve both near and short term objectives. They will receive general supervision and high-level instruction from the Director of the Gynaecological Tissue Bank when new duties are assigned. The employee will take initiative to collaborate with other group members in managing work plans, assigning tasks, and responding to problems. Receives detailed instructions only on unusual problems or on matters that depart significantly from established policy and procedure.

Supervision Given
Will train and supervise the work done by rotational co-op trainees who support activities of the biobank.

Minimum Qualifications
Completion of a relevant technical program or a university degree in a relevant discipline and a minimum three years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own
