Nature of the Position:

The New College Writing Centre invites applications for one STEM Writing Instructor position for the Summer 2026 session. The successful candidate will provide writing instruction to undergraduate students through one-to-one appointments, workshops, and writing community programming in both online and in-person formats.

Estimate number of positions available: 1

Estimate of the total number of hours: 50 hours

Estimate of the anticipated hours of work per position:

  • Up to 50 hours for the appointment period
  • Hours will vary based on Writing Centre operational needs

Schedule Information:

  • Teaching schedules will depend on Writing Centre needs
  • Applicants should be prepared to teach both online and in person
  • Weekend hours may be available and/or required
  • The successful candidate must be available to teach in person on the following days:
    • July 7–8, 2026
    • July 28–29, 2026

Sessional Dates of Appointment: July 1, 2026 – August 31, 2026

Salary:

  • Writing Instructor I: $55.46/hour + 4% vacation pay
  • Writing Instructor I – Long Term: $59.62/hour + 6% vacation pay
  • Writing Instructor II: $59.62/hour + 6% vacation pay
  • Writing Instructor II – Long Term: $61.04/hour + 6% vacation pay
  • Writing Instructor II (Priority): $61.38/hour + 6% vacation pay
  • Writing Instructor II (Priority) – Long Term: $62.83/hour + 6% vacation pay

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must have:

  • A completed PhD degree in a STEM field.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach writing and communication skills to students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Previous experience teaching writing at the university level, either in a university writing centre and/or in university level courses with significant writing components
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to teach academic writing and critical skills in a one-to-one mode and across a variety of disciplines and programs, including those of New College
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate interactive workshops
  • Familiarity with forms of writing and oral communication in a broad range of disciplinary curricula
  • Superior ability to work closely with the genre, rhetoric and grammar of student texts
  • The ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a highly collaborative environment

Preferred Qualifications:

The following would be considered assets:

  • Familiarity with any of the following approaches to scholarship: anti-colonial, decolonizing, anti-racist, feminist, queer, disability, anti-homophobic, Indigenous and scientific.

Description of Duties:

Duties may include:

  • Providing one-to-one writing instruction to undergraduate students
  • Supporting students in critical reading, critical analysis, argumentation, research skills, drafting, revising, and oral presentation preparation
  • Facilitating writing workshops and drop-in writing communities
  • Supporting students from diverse linguistic and educational backgrounds
  • Delivering curriculum and programming for English language learners where required
  • Teaching students enrolled in New College academic programs and broader Faculty of Arts & Science courses
