Job description

Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) is a unique Indigenous Institute recognized by community government and institutions of higher learning as a Centre of Excellence for Indigenous Knowledge. SNP offers postsecondary secondary trades education and training. SNP has formal partnerships with nine publicly funded Ontario Universities and Colleges and collaborates with six Ontario-based Indigenous owned and controlled post-secondary Institutes.

JOB PURPOSE


Under the supervision of the Associate Dean Skilled Trades & Apprenticeship the Skilled Trades Instructor provides academic leadership and develops an effective learning environment in the program shop and classroom. The Instructor develops delivers and evaluates students within the apprenticeship pre-apprenticeship and post-secondary skilled trades Instructor is required to perform all duties consistent with the governance values and operating policies of Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) while fostering positive relations with staff students stakeholders and the community; contributing to a culturally supportive teaching learning and work environment consistent with Hodinǫshǫ:nih/Rotinonhson:ni values of Ganigohi:yo:/Kanikoriio (Respect and the Good Mind).


KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES


Program Planning & Delivery35%

  • Designs and delivers curriculum aligned with Skills Trades Ontario and SNP learning objectives. This includes preparing lesson plans instructional materials and teaching both theory and practical skills in classroom and shop settings.
  • Developing course outlines and assignments to support learner progress and program requirements.
  • Demonstrating safe and proper use of tools and equipment ensuring students follow all safety protocols.
  • Maintaining a clean organized and safe shop environment ensuring compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Other related duties asrequired.


Student Evaluation & Support 20%

  • Assesses student progress using various evaluation methods maintains records and provides academic support through consultation and referrals.
  • Submitting evaluations and grades in accordance with program timelines and institutional requirements.
  • Tracking attendance and performance to ensure compliance with program expectations and to identify support needs.
  • Referring students to support services to promote learner success and retention.
  • Other related duties asrequired.


Work Placement Coordination 20%

  • Identifies secures and monitors student work placements that align with career goals and program standards. Maintains employer relationships and supports students throughout their placements.
  • Conducting site visits to confirm suitability ensure compliance with safety and program expectations and monitor student progress.
  • Maintaining placement records including employer information student progress notes and required documentation.
  • Supporting students with placement-related challenges providing guidance problem-solving and coordination with employers or support services as needed.
  • Other related duties asrequired.


Program Operation & Resources Management 20%

  • Supports day-to-day operations of the shop and program including inventory management equipment maintenance and input on scheduling and curriculum development.
  • Preparing purchase orders to ensure tools supplies and materials are available to meet instructional needs.
  • Reporting equipment issues to ensure timely repairs and safe operation of all shop resources.
  • Advising on program needs providing input on equipment upgrades resource planning and operational improvements that support program quality and delivery.
  • Other related duties asrequired.


Institutional/ Program Engagement & Administration 10%

  • Participates in institutional activities adheres to policies and contributes to planning and reporting. Supports events and collaborative initiatives across SNP by attending meetings and training supporting orientation and annual celebration and contributing to policy development.

EDUCATIONAL KNOWLEDGE

Completion of post-secondary college or university in Welding and/or Machinist or a Certificate of Apprenticeship or Certificate of Qualification for the program of instruction.


A Red Seal Endorsement is preferred.


EXPERIENTIAL KNOWLEDGE / CULTURE AND LANGUAGE EXPERTISE


Over 3 years and including 5 years of experience of Industry experience in welding or machining including hands-on work with tools equipment and safety procedures in a skilled trades environment.


Experience in instructional delivery within post-secondary or apprenticeship programs including curriculum development student evaluation and coordination of work placements. Familiarity with administrative processes record-keeping and stakeholder engagement is also required.


Criminal Record Check

The successful candidate will be required to provide an original Criminal Background Check Vulnerable Sector Screening that is satisfactory to Six Nations Polytechnic (SNP) prior to the first day of work at Six Nations Polytechnic and an Offence Declaration that is satisfactory to SNP by their first day of employment at Six Nations Polytechnic.

POSITION TYPE:New Position

JOB TYPE: approx. 8 week Contract On Call

SCHEDULE: up to 37.5hrs Monday-Friday

WORK MODEL:On-site

PAY BAND:6; Core range $33.27 - $38.98 per hour. The target hiring salary for this position is minimum (Step 1) up to 45% of the pay band. Considerations for new hire step placements include experiential knowledge and/or language and cultural expertise.
