You will design and actively participate in activities, provide individualized support as needed, help children navigate conflicts, and model positive behaviours. You’ll also contribute to care plans, support each child’s unique strengths, maintain appropriate staff-to-child ratios, and ensure a safe, inclusive space where every child feels valued and supported.

This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful impact in children’s daily experiences while helping foster a strong sense of belonging and growth.

Major Responsibilities- in this position, you will:

  • Support the development and delivery of high-quality, age-appropriate programs (ages 5-12) aligned with YMCA standards, A Place to Connect curriculum, and all legislative requirements.
  • Design and lead engaging indoor and outdoor activities that promote learning, wellness, and inclusion
  • Provide direct supervision, guidance, and mentorship to new staff and volunteers, fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with children, families, staff, and community partners to ensure exceptional service delivery
  • Communicate effectively with participants and partners while supporting organization-wide initiatives and fundraising efforts.
  • Create and sustain a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment that promotes belonging, confidence, and positive self-esteem in children
  • Consistently maintain active supervision and engagement while ensuring full compliance with YMCA, Child Care Licensing (CCFL), health, safety, and legal requirements
  • Interact directly with children to deliver child-centered programming, support positive behaviour, and guide conflict resolution.
  • Provide individualized support to children, including contributing to the development and implementation of care plans and maintaining enhanced ratios where required
  • Collaborate with team members to implement inclusive practices and support children with diverse needs to fully participate in programming.
  • Monitor and maintain program spaces to ensure they are clean, safe, organized, and professional, including activity areas and washrooms.
  • Prepare and serve nutritious snacks in accordance with health and safety guidelines
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of all information related to children, families, staff, and operations

Qualification-you bring:

  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Bring experience working with children ages 5–12 and are passionate about delivering engaging, high-quality programs
  • Are confident planning and leading inclusive indoor and outdoor activities that support learning and development
  • Able to build strong, respectful relationships with children, families, colleagues, schools and community partners
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, with a strong track record of reliability and commitment
  • Understand (or are willing to learn) YMCA standards, Child Care Licensing (CCFL), and health and safety requirements
  • Take pride in maintaining clean, organized, and welcoming program environments
  • Comfortable with day-to-day responsibilities such as snack preparation and general program upkeep
  • Demonstrate clear communication, professionalism, discretion, and a strong commitment to maintaining confidentiality
  • Take initiative, demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, and approach challenges with a positive mindset
  • Demonstrate strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and the ability to learn new software.
  • Emergency First Aid & CPR certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire is required).
  • Completion of 20 hours of training in Child Development, Child Guidance, and/or Nutrition is required; YMCA BC offers complimentary training to support this requirement
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide or obtain, prior to starting, a current and satisfactory Criminal Record Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search.
