Position Summary:

Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health is dedicated to promoting and protecting the health of individuals and communities in Wellington County Dufferin County and the City of Guelph. As a Nursing Student you will have the opportunity to contribute to the health and well-being of our communities while gaining valuable experience in a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

The 4 placements available are:
Clinical Services and Vaccine Preventable Diseases at our Orangeville office.
Client and Community Support at our Guelph office.
Clinical Services at our Guelph office.
Infectious Diseases at our Guelph office.

As part of the Clinical Services team your role will include:
Assessing screening educating and planning for asymptomatic sexual health clients.
Case management of Gonorrhea Chlamydia Syphilis HIV and Mpox positive results.
Supporting symptomatic sexual health and reproductive health medical clinics.
Planting and interpretation of Tuberculin Skin Tests.
Management of Tuberculosis medical surveillance clients.
Case management of active and latent Tuberculosis cases.
Supporting an outreach clinic at the Royal City Mission.
Supporting community distribution of harm reduction supplies and naloxone.
Supporting community management of needles and other drug paraphernalia.
Partnering with community agencies to further public health messaging on sexual and reproductive health harm reduction and Tuberculosis.

As part of the Vaccine Preventable Diseases team your role will include:
Providing school-based and in-office immunization clinics.
Providing health teaching on vaccine preventable diseases and prevention.
Conducting assessments of immunization records under the Immunization of School Pupils Act.
Cold Chain management.

As part of the Client and Community Support team your role will include:
Providing hands-on clinical services for immunization flu COVID and sexual health clients with the possibility of floating to various office and off-site clinics and outreach service sites.
Providing school-based immunization clinics.
Conducting assessments of immunization records under the Immunization of School Pupils Act.
Conducting case management and contact tracing for diseases of public health significance.
Providing telephone support to community clients and partners regarding topics of public health concern including the use of artificial intelligence and digital communication tools to support timely accurate and accessible public health guidance and client education.
Addressing requests and inquiries from community and partners.
Responding to and supporting all areas of public health.

As part of the Infection Diseases team your role will include:
Conducting case management and contact tracing for diseases of public health significance including vaccine preventable diseases vector borne and zoonotic diseases respiratory disease and bloodborne infections.
Identifying and managing disease exposures clusters and outbreaks.
Providing testing IPAC and post-exposure prophylaxis information to community partners and healthcare providers.
Responding to any requirements under the Mandatory Blood Testing Act and Designated Officer Program.
Monitoring infectious disease intake line for outbreak/disease reporting.
Supporting emergency preparedness portfolio to ensure readiness within the agency and community during times of disease surge.
Partnering with community agencies to further public health messaging on infectious disease prevention and response.

Please note this is an unpaid practicum opportunity only for students currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at an accredited school/academic program as recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities.

Please note that this is an in-person position that involves a combination of in-office work and community-based work within our region.

Hours of Work:

Regular office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm.
May include evening or weekend work. Flexible working hours are required.

Requirements:

Must be currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program as an active student in an accredited school/academic program as recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities.
Must be in the fourth year of your program.
Must have valid drivers license and use of vehicle.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong initiative.
Good problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently (under the supervision of a practicum placement staff) and in a team.
Ability to maintain confidential information.
