Job description

Executive Director

Childcan, The Childhood Cancer Research Association

Faced with the news that their child has cancer, families from across south western Ontario have turned to Childcan for direct support since 1974. We provide financial assistance, emotional support, social programs, and research funding, all made possible because of donors who get involved and know that childhood cancer is an experience that nobody thinks they will face, let alone one that families can prepare for. Our families are at the heart of everything we do and we believe that through community collaboration, we can truly make a difference for parents, children, siblings, and caregivers while bringing HOPE for a future beyond childhood cancer.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a new Executive Director who will champion our mission and inspire our small talented team, dedicated volunteers, passionate donors, and community partners to work together toward our shared goals while always focused on the needs of our families. Along with the Board of Directors, our new Executive Director will lead with integrity, empathy, strategic insight, and accountability.

What You Will Do

Your leadership will directly impact the lives of our families and ensure the continuation of our mission for years to come. In close partnership with our Board of Directors, you will:

  • lead the strategic direction of Childcan and ensure our measurable objectives align with our mission and long-term goals.
  • oversee the design, delivery, and evaluation of our impactful programs that support the needs of the families we serve.
  • cultivate and maintain strong relationships with our donors, sponsors, community partners, healthcare professionals, and researchers.
  • develop and execute fundraising strategies across all giving modalities, including major gifts, grants, legacy giving, and events to ensure our short and long-term financial sustainability.
  • develop and manage our organization’s budget, financial health, and operational efficiency with transparency, accountability, and risk management.
  • inspire, coach, mentor, and support our staff and volunteers while nurturing a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and innovation.
  • serve as the public face of Childcan by representing our mission at events, in the media, and within the community.
  • work closely with our Board of Directors to ensure strong governance practices and effective decision-making.

What You Will Bring

  • A leadership style that is grounded in collaboration, compassion, integrity, transparency, and trust.
  • Proven executive leadership in the non-profit or charitable sector, ideally as an Executive Director or in a Senior Management role with 7-10 years or more experience.
  • Strategic and critical thinking paired with the proven ability to develop and execute plans effectively.
  • Strong track record in fundraising, donor stewardship, partnership cultivation, fund development, and creative marketing, ideally with relevant post secondary education and a fundraising professional designation.
  • Exceptional communication, public speaking, and writing skills, ideally with the ability to inspire diverse audiences.
  • Financial acumen, including proven expertise in managing budgets and ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • A deep commitment to equity, inclusion, and community engagement.
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors and understanding of non-profit governance policies and practices, ideally having served on a Board.

Why You Will Love It at Childcan

  • This is an opportunity for you to lead a respected and growing organization and make a daily tangible impact in the lives of families affected by childhood cancer.
  • You will work with a small, passionate, and talented staff team, as well as dedicated volunteers who live our values and are committed to collaboration, creativity, compassion, and caring.
  • The Board of Directors will support you in relevant professional development opportunities such as leadership training and conference attendance.
  • You will experience and foster a culture that celebrates successes, big and small, and recognizes the contributions of every staff member, volunteer, donor, partner, and the families we serve.

If you are ready to lead with purpose and passion, we would love to hear from you, please send your resume with a cover letter which includes why our mission matters to you.

You might be exactly who we are looking for!
