Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

The primary accountabilities of the Health, Safety & Risk Coordinator include managing Divisional health and safety action plans, audits and assessments; analyze trends; division specific health and safety policy review; attend Joint Health & Safety Committee meetings; support supervisors in health and safety investigations (accident, injury, hazard); participate on internal health and safety networks.

** Anticipated contract - to end of 2026 with possibility of extension/permanent status **

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (not listed in order of priority)

1. Provide technical expertise and support in the identification, measurement, and control of occupational health hazards and unsafe conditions.

2. Provide statistical information to assist in identifying trends and support opportunities for process efficiency and improvement.

3. Work with Supervisor to audit all work groups and locations to ensure compliance with corporate policies and all applicable legislation, regulations and standards.

4. Assist with collecting and analyzing safety metrics and conduct related research. Identify trends and disseminate information through reports to management and Health & Safety Committees.

5. Support management by tracking Health & Safety corrective and preventive actions arising from audits, inspections, incidents, investigations, and assessments; monitoring status and completion timelines; and providing regular updates to support timely closure and continuous improvement.

6. Liaise with internal and external Health & Safety groups

7. Maintain knowledge of current and pending legislation to provide input to all matters of Health & Safety through development and evaluation of County policies and programs.

8. Develop a sound network and working relationships with line management and Health & Safety professionals both internally and externally.

9. Participate in the development and research of Health & Safety information for distribution by managers, supervisors and Joint Health & Safety committees to ensure all employees of the County are aware of pertinent Health & Safety issues.

10. Participate in developing, facilitating and evaluating Health & Safety training programs including legislative compliance, accident/incident investigation, workplace inspections, etc.

11. Provide input and participate in initiatives related to psychological health and safety, including contributing to activities that support the voluntary alignment with the National Standard and its 13 Factors for a psychologically safe workplace.

12. Provide support to managers/supervisors in the investigation of accidents/incidents to determine cause and develop and implement corrective and preventative measures.

13. Coordinate and participate in Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings within assigned areas, ensuring effectiveness and efficiency of the JHSC.

14. Participate in committees as required.

15. Perform other duties as assigned, including redeployment in emergency situations.

16. Comply with provincial and County occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, policies and procedures.

17. Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

EDUCATION, TECHNICAL SKILLS AND CERTIFICATION

• Post-secondary education (diploma or degree) in Occupational Health & Safety. This job may be considered for educational equivalency in accordance with County Policy.

• Have or working towards professional designation

• Certified Joint Health & Safety Committee Member.

• Strong investigative, analytical, and communication skills.

• Adult education training and experience would be an asset.

• Strong working knowledge of relevant legislations (OHSA, WSIA).

• Strong knowledge of computer software applications (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint).

• Valid G class driver’s license and access to reliable vehicle.

• Criminal records check that is less than 6 months old at time of hire.

EXPERIENCE

• A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a similar capacity in a multi-site, multi-disciplinary organization.

• Experience in a unionized environment.

• Proven ability to work in a team environment and build relationships.

• Excellent organizational and time management skills.

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

EFFORT

• Attention required when performing training sessions, accident investigations, report writing.

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Must travel within Simcoe County year round.

• Attends all County worksites, may exposed to dust, dirt, fumes, etc.

• Ability to work remotely if required.
