Why ENMAX?

We are driven by our purpose of lighting the way to a brighter energy future, a future that includes a workplace where you’ll experience belonging and unlock possibilities. We offer meaningful opportunities, strong collaboration and a career aligned to what matters to you. We’re proud of who we are and the work we do to support our communities and customers who depend on us, because at ENMAX, we’re lighting the way together.

The Manager, Enterprise Safety is accountable for leading all aspects of ENMAX’s safety functions, including day-to-day support to business units, ongoing stewardship of ENMAX’s safety management system, and enabling ENMAX’s continual evolution of our proactive and learning focused culture. This role leads ENMAX’s modern, learning-centered safety strategy, grounded in Human and Organizational Performance (HOP), Safety Classification and Learning (SCL), a high-energy and serious-injury-and-fatality (SIF) prevention focus, and proactive frontline engagement.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Champion ENMAX's Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) philosophy across all operational groups by building error-tolerant systems, learning teams, and leadership practices that treat error as normal and prioritize learning over blame.

  • Lead adoption of the Safety Classification and Learning (SCL) model and a high-energy hazard focus, classifying work and events by their serious-injury-and-fatality (SIF) potential, embedding energy-based hazard recognition, and verifying that direct controls are in place for high-energy exposures.

  • Advance proactive engagement and leading-indicator programs such as field presence, safety interactions, learning teams, good catches and worker-led problem solving that surface and resolve risk before incidents occur.

  • Oversee the development, maintenance and implementation of ENMAX's safety management system across all operational groups, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and regulations.

  • Oversee process safety and operational or critical-risk management across high-hazard facilities, using barrier-based (bowtie) approaches and verifying that critical controls for major-accident and high-energy exposures are in place and effective.

  • Lead 24/7 incident response, investigation and learning reviews, applying HOP-aligned learning-team methods along with systemic and root-cause analysis, driving corrective actions to closure, and sharing significant learnings enterprise-wide.

  • Ensure consistent use of ENMAX's safety reporting systems (e.g., Maximo) and processes, supporting data quality and governance so that accurate, timely safety performance reporting, pairing modern leading and SIF measures with traditional indicators, is available to stakeholders.

  • Coordinate ENMAX's operational perspective on safety policy with government agencies and industry organizations (e.g., the Canadian Electricity Association), and support internal and external safety audits through to closure.

  • Lead, motivate and develop team members through coaching, mentorship and project exposure using a collaborative One ENMAX approach.

Education Required:

  • Relevant undergraduate degree, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience may be considered.

  • Industry-recognized safety designation such as Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP), or Safety Codes Officer (SCO).

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation combined with demonstrated safety experience may be considered in lieu of a safety designation.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience applying modern safety methodologies, including Human and Organizational Performance (HOP), serious-injury-and-fatality (SIF) and high-energy hazard reduction, and learning-based event analysis (e.g., SCL); experience leading learning teams is an asset.

  • Experience leading staff in incident response and investigation or learning reviews, producing related documentation, and implementing resulting recommendations.

  • Previous people-leadership experience; able to coach, mentor and develop employees in a positive, collaborative fashion.

  • Experience within utility, power generation, industrial, oil and gas, mining, or other high-hazard operating environments; experience in electricity generation operations is an asset.

  • Knowledge of process safety management frameworks and barrier-based risk management approaches is an asset.

  • Field experience would be considered a strong asset

Competencies:

  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to workplace safety by adhering to protocols and proactively identifying potential risks

  • Thrives in fast-paced environments, effectively prioritizing tasks and consistently delivering results under tight deadlines

  • Works both independently and collaboratively, contributing to team success and organizational goals

  • Self-driven professional with a strong work ethic and a proactive, results-oriented mindset

  • Takes ownership of responsibilities while maintaining a positive, solutions-focused approach

  • Champions a respectful, inclusive workplace culture that values diversity and supports collaboration
