Projects Manager

Position Summary:

The Projects Manager (Co-engineering) creates value for ArcelorMittal and its strategic customers by providing leading-edge advanced engineering services to improve the performance, efficiency, weight and cost of our customers’ sheet, tailored blanks or tubular steel products. Advanced engineering services include creating design and tooling process solutions, performing computer-aided or manual calculations, coordinating load testing of actual parts and assemblies, and interpreting test results.

Primary Functions

    • Lead the development of generic steel solutions to demonstrate the viability of steel for future applications and communicate results to our customers.

    • Establish strong and sustainable positive relationships with design and product development engineers with our strategic customers.

    • Evaluate the structural performance and manufacturing feasibility of our customers’ products.

    • Recommend technical changes (eg. part geometry, material, tooling) to the customer and assist with implementation

    • Identify, evaluate and develop cost saving or weight saving opportunities in customers’ products or manufacturing processes (eg. by participating in teardowns) and assist with the implementation of ideas

    • Develop and recommend competitive steel solutions for customers’ applications threatened by other materials (e.g. wood, aluminum, plastics) and assist customers in developing their new steel products.

    • Design, prepare and assemble structural test specimens and test setups.

    • Install instrumentation including load cells, displacement transducers, strain gauges, pressure sensors, and data acquisition systems.

    • Perform preliminary engineering calculations (load, deflection and/or stress) on equipment, fixtures and assemblies to conduct component testing

    • Fulfill corporate Health and Safety responsibilities, environmental responsibilities, and responsibilities identified in the Performance Management and Attendance Management Processes.

    • Operate hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical testing equipment.

    • Monitor testing activities and collect accurate test data.

    • Perform routine calibration checks and maintenance of laboratory equipment.

    • Assist in troubleshooting testing equipment and instrumentation issues.

    • Maintain accurate records of testing activities, measurements, and laboratory procedures.

    • Interpret test results and effectively report these results and their relevancy to the customer through informal communication as well as publishing formal testing reports

    • Review and interpret industry and/or proprietary standards for customer tests

    • Generate cost savings ideas for the component test shop through digitalization, computational analysis and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) techniques

    • Maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Best Practices and Job Safe Practices

    • Develop, implement, and maintain Equipment Operating Procedures (EOPs) for lab testing equipment

    • Coordinate and maintain the calibration program for testing equipment to ensure compliance with applicable standards

    • Develop, standardize, and maintain Standard Testing Procedures (STPs) for laboratory testing activities

    • Perform and document regular safety inspections of the testing laboratory, shop areas, and associated manufacturing and testing equipment to ensure compliance with safety requirements

    • Coordinate procurement of materials, equipment, and external services required to support testing activities and laboratory operations

    • Plan and prioritize test setup activities to optimize workflow efficiency, minimize material usage, and meet project schedules

    • Evaluate and acquire computer-aided engineering tools and test equipment to improve support capabilities

    • Regularly interact with shop personnel to devise and ensure safe and successful testing programs

    • Interact with other ArcelorMittal Global R&D labs, contract engineering services, and customers in North America and Europe to deliver advanced engineering support.

Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Applied Science in the field of structural or mechanical preferred. Applicants with Technologist Diplomas in similar fields may apply.

    • Minimum six years of relevant experience is required.

    • Experience with structural testing and materials testing.

    • Familiarity with industry standards including ASTM, CSA, UL and ISO.

    • Experience with data acquisition systems and instrumentation.

    • Experience using CAD software and generating technical drawings.

    • Experience in welding, machining, fabrication, or general construction is an asset.

    • Experience with operating forklift, overhead crane, or lift equipment is an asset.

Hours of Work:

  • Straight days, Monday to Friday, with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads.

  • This position is eligible for remote work in accordance with our Flexibile Work Options policy.

Work Environment:

    • Balance between office work and (hands on) laboratory testing environment

    • Occasional visits to customer plants, conferences and external institutions

Total Rewards at ArcelorMittal Dofasco

The salary range for this position is $103,000 - $129,000. Starting salary will depend on the successful candidate’s qualifications and work experience.

On your first day you will immediately be eligible for:

    • Participation in our annual bonus plan based on the achievement of Company goals against target metrics at a rate of 15%
    • Company paid Defined Contribution Pension Plan with employer contributions between 5 and 10%. No employee contribution required.

    • For health and dental claims, you only pay amounts above the maximums the plan pays.
    • Life insurance premiums are shared with the company.

After two years of permanent company service, you will participate in our Profit Sharing, where all permanent employees share equally in the allocation of profits.
