CBC Saskatchewan is hiring a reporter-editor for our new bureau in Yorkton, an area with a large agricultural and manufacturing base putting it at the centre of conversations that shape local, provincial and geopolitical trade and economic security.

Adaptability is key to the role of reporter-editor. One day you could be covering a hyper-local story that matters to local residents, or working behind the scenes to line up interviews for a morning radio program. The next day you could be covering a federal announcement on agricultural support, or contributing to broadcast and digital platforms live. Central to all of your coverage is ensuring voices from the region are reflected in our journalism across digital, radio, social, streaming and TV.

As the base for the Yorkton Tribal Council, representing six member Treaty 4 First Nations, your reporting will also play a key role in the CBC News strategy to connect and amplify Indigenous content to audiences in Saskatchewan and across Canada.

In this role, you’ll operate independently, under the direction of the CBC Saskatchewan assignment desk. While you’re comfortable taking the initiative and working solo to get things done, you will have a lot of daily support from your colleagues at both the CBC Saskatoon and Regina stations. We’re a collaborative group, here to support you in your daily assignment. You will also have access to ongoing training opportunities to support your development with CBC News.

Affordable housing, short commutes and easy-access to year round activities make this an ideal location for those looking for work-life balance. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the easy access to parks, beaches, trails, fishing and wildlife. Home to North America’s longest running film festival, Yorkton also has a vibrant cultural community.

The role requires you to be full-time on-site in our Yorkton bureau. You will be provided with a vehicle to get to stories throughout the region, which spans east central Saskatchewan and to the Manitoba border.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Pitch, research, gather and produce original story ideas for digital, social, radio, streaming and TV programming that will engage and inform audiences, deepen community connections and elevate a range of voices, especially those who have typically been underrepresented in media.

  • Respond quickly to breaking news events as they unfold.

  • Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.

  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of contacts and community members.

  • Collaborate with colleagues across CBC to develop and break stories, plan and produce features and coordinate long-term coverage.

  • Ensure CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate and resonate with the communities we serve.

What you bring:

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment, or an equivalent position in a deadline driven environment with transferable skills.

  • Ability to work independently with superior problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original stories that meet the needs of audiences.

  • A proven track record of connecting with local communities.

  • Superior writing skills, and experience in gathering, editing and packaging audio and video.

  • Ability to present stories live on-air, from within the studio and out in the field.

  • A willingness to embrace change and take on new tasks as the media industry evolves.

  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio Canada’s insurance company.

  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends, as required.

  • University degree or college certificate in journalism or equivalent, with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience.

NOTE: Before submitting an application, please ensure you’ve read the full description of these jobs and locations . When you apply, you must indicate which locations you’re interested in.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next

step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.

  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
