Job Title: Heavy Equipment OperatorJob DescriptionThis role involves safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment such as excavators, skid steers, and rollers on civil construction projects across multiple sites from Vancouver to Maple Ridge. You will work around underground and above-ground utilities, support stormwater and civil infrastructure work, and perform general labor tasks as needed. The position requires a hands-on operator who is comfortable working in changing site conditions, performing equipment inspections, and contributing to a collaborative, safety-focused crew.
Responsibilities
- Operate excavators, skid steers, and rollers safely and efficiently on civil construction sites.
- Work around underground and above-ground utilities with a strong focus on safety and damage prevention.
- Perform mainline and underground work related to civil construction and stormwater infrastructure.
- Sort materials on site and load trucks accurately and efficiently.
- Dig trenches and excavations to specified depths and alignments for utilities and other civil works.
- Carry out general labor tasks, including shoveling, raking, and site clean-up, as required.
- Clean equipment tracks and perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure equipment is in safe working condition.
- Identify and report equipment defects or maintenance needs promptly.
- Assist with site setup and demobilization as projects move between locations.
- Lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs as part of daily duties.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and other trades to coordinate work and maintain safe operations.
- Follow all site safety procedures, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Work productively in all weather conditions, both indoors and outdoors, including muddy and uneven terrain.
- Support project activities at various sites, including locations such as UBC and East Maple Ridge, as project needs change.
Essential Skills- Minimum 5+ years of experience operating an excavator on civil construction projects.
- Proficiency operating heavy equipment such as excavators and skid steers.
- Experience working on mainline and underground utilities, including civil and stormwater infrastructure.
- Ability and willingness to perform general labor tasks in addition to equipment operation.
- Experience cleaning equipment tracks and performing thorough pre-trip inspections.
- Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs as part of regular duties.
- Ownership and use of required PPE, including 6" steel-toed boots, safety glasses, protective gloves, hard hat, and high-visibility vest.
- Access to a reliable car for travel between changing job sites.
- Strong communication skills to coordinate work and maintain a safe job site.
- Comfort working in all types of weather conditions, indoors and outdoors, including muddy and uneven ground.
- Understanding of working around underground utilities and adherence to safe digging practices.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience operating rollers on civil construction sites.
- Forklift experience in a construction or industrial environment.
- Previous exposure to or experience in pipelaying and civil construction activities.
- Experience working with stormwater systems and related civil infrastructure.
- Willingness to learn from mentorship and develop skills on a variety of equipment.
- Flexibility to move between different sites as project needs change.

Work Environment
The work environment is field-based and dynamic, with projects located across multiple sites from UBC to East Maple Ridge, including parking lots and school settings. You will primarily work outdoors in all weather conditions, including rain, cold, heat, and muddy terrain, and must be comfortable working on active construction sites where conditions change frequently. Sites move often, so you will travel between locations as projects progress. The role may involve both indoor and outdoor tasks, depending on the project stage and location. Personal protective equipment is mandatory, including 6" steel-toed boots, safety glasses, protective gloves, a hard hat, and a high-visibility vest, to ensure safety in a busy civil construction environment. Overtime may be available depending on project demands, and the work involves regular physical activity, equipment operation, and collaboration with a field crew.
