Job Description Summary

This position provides clinical and on-field medical coverage and includes a significant role in delivering direct therapy services to student-athletes. The Athletic Therapist/Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for preventing recognizing evaluating and managing acute musculoskeletal injuries while coordinating further medical care when necessary. Additionally the role includes mentoring student trainers offering leadership and educating them on best practices in athletic therapy.

The clinical responsibilities include assessing and treating injured athletes from varsity sports programs using the latest athletic therapy techniques. The position also involves coordinating with Integrated Support Team (IST) membersmental performance coaches strength and conditioning staff sports medicine physicians general practitioners physiotherapists dietitians and other professionalsto make informed return-to-play decisions.

The Strength and Conditioning component includes collaborating with head coaches and the Head Therapist to develop implement and evaluate strength and conditioning programs for all varsity teams. This role also supervises strength and conditioning interns and oversees the maintenance of a 1200-square-foot training facility exclusive to varsity athletes.

Organizational Status

Reports to the Head Therapist. Liaises with the varsity team doctors and varsity head coaches. Provides ongoing supervision training and education to student athletic trainers and therapists.

Work Performed

Athletic Therapy (at least 40% of the time):

  • Assists the Head Therapist in developing and implementing sport-specific injury care and prevention protocols.
  • Provides athletic therapy services and design rehabilitation programs for injured varsity athletes.
  • Assists the Head Therapist with the implementation of up-to-date injury assessment programs.
  • Delivers on-field emergency care including injury assessment basic life support acute neurological dysfunction management and first aid.
  • Assess injuries and conditions uses contemporary rehabilitative techniques therapeutic modalities soft tissue mobilization physical reconditioning and supportive strapping procedures to optimize recovery and prepare student-athletes for safe return to competition.
  • Provides leadership and guidance to student athletes in the treatment rehabilitation and reconditioning of injuries and/or illnesses.
  • Collaborates with the varsity team doctors and local sports medicine community to ensure optimal medical care for student-athletes.
  • Support preseason medical evaluations and ensure athletes health profiles are updated and stored in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
  • Implement protocols for dealing with injured student athletes during practice training and competition.

As directed by the Head Therapist:

  • Supervise and mentor approximately 40 student trainers and ensure their ongoing development through regular learning sessions.
  • Oversee the execution of fitness testing and assist coaches in setting and achieving team performance goals.
  • Administer on-site medical and first-aid coverage for varsity and special events.
  • Track clinic inventory and assist in ordering medical supplies as needed.
  • Support the Head Therapist with the student athletic therapist and student athletic trainer program including student recruitment selection (in conjunction with the HES) training education and on-going supervision of student therapy/training staff.

Human Performance Lead Strength & Conditioning (at least 40% of the time):

  • Design implement and evaluate annual strength and conditioning programs for varsity teams tailored to pre-season in-season post-season and off-season needs.
  • Collaborate with coaches to plan and deliver pre- and post-practice/game routines including warm-ups cool-downs and recovery sessions.
  • Maintain and oversee the training facility ensuring equipment is regularly serviced and updated.
  • Manage the strength and conditioning intern program providing recruitment onboarding supervision and mentorship.
  • Stay current on best practices in strength and conditioning and deliver educational sessions for interns.
  • Ensure athlete data is accurately tracked using strength training software and integrate performance analytics to inform training decisions.
  • Use advanced testing equipment (e.g. force plates timing lights dynamometers) to assess athlete performance and develop key performance indicators (KPIs) for each sport.
  • Address the psychological physical and nutritional aspects of performance and ensure holistic development for student-athletes.

Other:

  • Represent the University at relevant professional and athletic association meetings.
  • Prepare reports and manage special projects as required.
  • Oversee the units social media platform.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

Errors could negatively impact the health and well-being of student-athletes delaying their return to competition and affecting team performance. Mismanagement of Strength & Conditioning duties could result in athlete injuries or failure to meet fitness goals impacting both individual and team outcomes.

Supervision Received

Reports to and works under the direction of the Head Therapist.

Supervision Given

Provides supervision to student-athletes student athletic therapists and student athletic trainers.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certified member in good standing with the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) or Sport Physiotherapist (SPC).
  • Certified or Accredited Strength and Conditioning Coach by the NSCA (CSCS) CSCA (CSCP) or CSEP (High Performance Specialization).
  • Advanced First Aid CPR/AED Certification and personal malpractice insurance.
  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives including perspectives in conflict with ones own.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing ones own awareness knowledge and skills related to equity diversity and inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in elite-level athlete strength training and injury prevention in a team environment.
  • Strong organizational interpersonal and communication skills.
  • A positive attitude with a commitment to promoting health and well-being.
  • This position requires working evenings and weekends from August to March and some travel may be necessary.
