Job Overview

The Personal Care Attendant (PCA), reporting to the Associate Director of Care (ADoC) of the applicable Resident Home Area, provides direct personal care to the resident, in a manner that provides for independence, support, and safety.

As a member of the interdisciplinary team, the PCA will assist with all aspects of the residents’ activities of daily living (ADLs) as required and will advance quality of care, safety and the experience of people we serve.

Responsibilities

  • Provides support and/or assistance to the residents to meet their needs and expectations as per the residents’ individual plan of care including but not limited to personal hygiene, dressing, mobility, toileting, feeding.

  • Provides support by maintaining the cleanliness and neatness of resident living area.

  • Ensures the resident’s equipment is safe and functional.

  • Accurately measures weight, height, intake and output and documents in the electronic health record [e.g. Point of Care (POC)].

  • Communicates all changes in resident status to the Registered Practical Nurse or to the Registered Nurse on duty.

  • Improves the residents’ optimum functional ability by providing restorative care processes in the specific personal care area using assistive and adaptive measures as ordered.

  • Promotes person-centered approaches to care by supporting a resident living environment that is comfortable and safe and provides privacy, dignity, individuality and safeguarding of personal choice.

  • Attends required training and education related to professional and skill development and keeps informed about new and relevant information related to best practices.

  • Performs personal care consistent with Kensington Health’s policies and procedures and the Resident Bill of Rights.

  • Responsible for working safely in compliance with accepted safe work practices, procedures and legislated health and safety standards (e.g., Use of appropriate equipment, protective devices and personal protective equipment as required, reports hazards, accidents and the absence of or defect in any equipment or protective device).

  • Attends all required health and safety training; and follows all established safe work procedures.

  • Fosters a workplace free of violence and harassment and promotes workplace safety.

  • Seeks out opportunities to maintain competency and to continuously learn, taking an active role in continuous quality improvement.

  • Provides input into the need and use of equipment and supplies required to provide care to residents.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in oral and written English.

  • Interest in working with the older adults and people living in Long-term Care.

  • Ability to work a shift rotation.

  • Ability in any other language is an asset.

Required Knowledge and Experience:

  • One year work experience in a long-term care home (preferred).

Required Professional Designation/Certificate:

  • Grade 12 certificate and Personal Support Worker certificate with completed minimum number of hours as outlined in the Fixing Long-Term Care Homes Act (2021) and associated regulations.

  • Medical clearance declaring fitness to work.
