Compensation
Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds.
· Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $ per hour.
· Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $ per hour.
In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate.
Duties
The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required.
If this course is offered online, given the nature of online courses, all Teaching Assistants must be able to provide online virtual office hours as well as support to the instructor and students in a timely fashion during the regular business day as well as during the evenings and on weekends.
Qualifications
a) Experience or familiarity with the design and/or execution of online courses together with familiarity with the technical aspects of Brightspace, Brock's Learning management system through which this course will be offered.
b) Master’s degree, candidate or Honours Degree in Human Geography or equivalent*. If vacancies remain, students enrolled in an Honours Program (completed 13 or more credits) in Human Geography or equivalent* will be considered.
c) Completion of 4 full credits in Human Geography with an overall average of 75% or higher in all Human Geography courses completed is required (or equivalent*).
d) Completion of the course for which the applicant wishes to be a teaching assistant with a final grade of 75% or higher in that course (or equivalent*).
e) Demonstrated successful undergraduate teaching experience or equivalent small group leadership in an undergraduate context.
f) Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
g) Ability to prioritize work and meet stipulated deadlines.
*Equivalency will be determined by the course instructor Applicant must make a case that their qualifications are equivalent to those required above.
