Position description

The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of technical management for Convocation Hall events and other University events requiring sound, lighting and presentation design as well as technical repair and support of stage and audiovisual equipment. The incumbent will work with student productions, road shows, university conferences, and with outside technical and equipment suppliers and service providers. The incumbent will also hire, train and supervise the crew of part time student theatre technicians. This position requires flexibility to work evenings and weekends as needed, as well as a regular on campus presence.

Position Responsibilities

  • Organize, produce, and manage the technical requirements and provide support for events in Convocation Hall, a 1,500 soft seat performance theatre and other smaller venues on campus.
  • Consult with performers and managers for pre performance sound, lighting, set, stage, and other requirements, supervise incoming professional road crews, conference and student groups, manage all technical support during setups and performances, and coordinate their departure.
  • Troubleshoot problems and provide creative solutions in time sensitive environments.
  • Coordinate all aspects of production including lighting design and operation, sound design, reinforcement and engineering, stage management, rigging, stage carpentry, video and sound recording, electrical, props and costuming for events.
  • Hire, train, and supervise student technicians for events at Convocation Hall and other venues including Convocation and other official ceremonies, Garnet & Gold, MASU, Performing Arts, Department of Music-sponsored events and events organized by Conferences & Event Services.
  • Implement, train, and enforce safety regulations and procedures concerning use of lighting, sound, stage and audiovisual equipment on campus.
  • The incumbent is also responsible for safety of patrons and non-production staff in Convocation Hall and other performance venues during events.
  • Recognize problems and ensure that emergency power, catwalks, curtains, circuit breakers, orchestra pit, 25ft electric person lift, lighting booms, house communication system, auditorium components, rehearsal space, change rooms, back stage facilities, front foyer, storage areas, organ, piano, and parking lot are maintained in good working order.
  • Communicate and coordinate necessary building maintenance with Facilities Management.
  • Identify, research, and recommend changes to Convocation Hall equipment to cover needs within budget.
  • Provide technical consulting for sound, lighting and performance setups for other venues on campus as required.
  • Assess and make decisions on equipment procurement from vendors.
  • Evaluate new gear and recommend equipment. Service and install new equipment.
  • Provide audiovisual support for academic requirements when required.
  • Provide AV trouble shooting support for classrooms and meeting rooms. Conduct maintenance, installation, operation, and testing of classroom digital technology and control systems.
  • Ensure that work orders are addressed and charged back in a timely manner.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/skills

  • Two years of post-secondary education and one to three years of related experience/training are required, including completed courses in stage lighting, sound equipment and stage management.
  • Experience with stage productions, road shows, conferences and related technical equipment and suppliers, along with excellent communication skills, the ability to work independently and in a team environment with a wide variety of groups are required.
  • Demonstrated competency in stage carpentry, costuming, props, rigging, video, electronics and other stage equipment would also be assets.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and organize time efficiently as well as an ability to thrive in stressful and high adrenaline live performance atmosphere in a creative and professional manner is required.
  • A valid driver’s license and a first aid certificate are required.
  • Heavy lifting, working at heights of up to 50 feet and the ability to maneuver on catwalks and grid systems and flexible/long hours are required at most times of the year.
