Job description

General Studies CDL Department Head

Who we are:

TanenbaumCHAT is a coeducational community Jewish high school. We offer an exciting and extensive educational experience, inside the classroom and beyond. Rigorous General and Jewish Studies curricula prepare students to attend the finest post-secondary institutions, to succeed in their chosen paths, and to become caring and contributing members of their communities.

Who we are looking for:

Reporting to the Principal or Vice Principal(s), the Co-Head of the Centre for Differentiated Learning is responsible for ensuring the school delivers educational services in general studies that best serve students with learning exceptionalities. They work closely with the Principal and Vice Principal(s), Director of Student Services, Deans, Guidance Counsellors, Co-Head of CDL, faculty and staff.

Duties

Management:

● Establish and communicate a vision and strategy to best serve students with diverse needs.

● Establish and implement procedures for the evaluation, placement, and reassessment of students with special needs.

● Review, analyze, and implement recommendations from psychoeducational reports and assessments.

● Oversee the school’s Individualized Learning Program, maintaining and updating individual educational plans.

● Liaise with staff, parents, students, and administration.

● Serve as part of the interview team for incoming students.

● Coordinate accommodations for testing, OSSLT, and final school exams.

● Provide counseling to students and parents regarding university entrance requirements and academic accommodations.

● Prepare disclosure letters for Grade 12 students applying to universities, coordinate and process teacher placement recommendations as part of the review meeting process, and participate in annual review meetings for all students in the CDL.

● Communicate with community professionals (psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers) regarding student needs.

● Schedule, organize, and supervise accommodated testing in the CDL, and maintain student records (physical and electronic).

● Summarize psychoeducational assessments for incoming students and for current students with new or updated evaluations.

Leadership:

● Provide leadership, coordination, and resources to CDL staff and Learning Strategies faculty.
Promote collegiality, foster a culture of learning, and encourage collaborative practice within the department.

● Drive departmental professional learning toward a culture of excellence, innovation, and creativity.

● Lead initiatives to improve curricular delivery and instruction for students with IEPs.

● Help shape the vision of the department, as part of the larger school vision, in collaboration with administration.

● Lead Departmental Meetings and outline a yearly learning plan that addresses student learning needs.

● Mentor and coach teachers.

● Represent the department at school events as needed.

● Serve as CDL ambassador throughout the school community.

Administration:

● Attend Department Head Meetings.

● Serve as departmental liaison to administration, consulting on matters including departmental staffing.

● Prepare the department budget.

● Ensure departmental content on Edsby is up to date.

● Ensure technology and technology training remain a priority for the department.

● Communicate and collaborate regularly with the Co-Head, where applicable.

Curricular Leader and Expert:

● Meet with new department members before the school year begins to explain department expectations and review course outlines.

● Ensure all teachers are up to date with curriculum requirements.

● Approve FSTs and exams as relevant.

● Standardize curriculum delivery and assessment within sections of a course.

● Ensure adherence to ministry guidelines and curricular updates.

● Arrange department PD as needed and collaborate with administration on professional learning.

● Ensure course outlines, including assessment quantity, weighting, and KTCA balance, are appropriate.

Requirements:

● Advanced degree (Masters or Doctorate) in Special Education or Learning Disabilities.

● Minimum of 10 years of direct experience serving the differentiated learning needs of students, including at least 3 years in a leadership capacity.

● Demonstrated track record of exceptional analytical skills, strategic thinking, and critical thinking about issues and solutions.

● Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build meaningful relationships quickly.

● OCT certification.
