Job Title: Durability Test Engineer
Job Description
The Durability Test Engineer sets up and executes durability tests using MTS real-time hydraulically actuated simulators and advanced data acquisition systems to support product development and validation. This role coordinates test specimen builds, configures and tunes simulators, manages data acquisition and processing, and communicates test results to product engineering teams. The engineer applies a strong understanding of damage severity concepts and stress-life/load-life calculations to assess component and system performance under real-world conditions.
Responsibilities
- Set up and conduct durability tests using MTS real-time hydraulically actuated simulators.
- Coordinate test specimen builds, ensuring all components and assemblies meet test requirements.
- Configure, operate, and tune data acquisition systems using various transducers, including accelerometers, load cells, and strain gauges.
- Perform simulator performance tuning to accurately replicate real-world loading conditions.
- Operate RPC Pro and FlexTest software to control and monitor simulator tests.
- Conduct data acquisition and testing at proving grounds, ensuring accurate and reliable measurements.
- Process and analyze durability test data, including application of damage severity concepts and stress-life/load-life calculations.
- Perform daily durability test inspections and prepare clear, concise reports on test status and findings.
- Communicate test results and technical findings to product engineering teams in a timely and professional manner.
- Attend and contribute to test issue reporting meetings, providing technical insight and recommendations.
- Assist in conducting durability issue investigations, including root cause analysis and validation of corrective actions.
- Develop, follow, and refine test plans and validation test procedures to support product test and DVP&R activities.
- Support validation testing for mechanical, electrical, and product systems as required.
- Apply hands-on skills in setting up tests, installing instrumentation, and troubleshooting equipment.
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineering teams to support advanced research, development, and product validation initiatives.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial, or Aeronautical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Experience with data acquisition equipment using various transducers, including accelerometers, load cells, and strain gauges.
- Understanding of damage severity analysis and stress-life/load-life calculations.
- Experience operating or supporting MTS real-time hydraulically actuated simulators.
- Working knowledge of RPC Pro and FlexTest software to operate durability test simulators.
- Competence with the Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and VBA.
- Strong time management skills with the ability to plan, prioritize, and follow up on multiple tasks.
- Demonstrated leadership capabilities in coordinating tests and working with cross-functional teams.
- Effective planning skills for organizing test activities and resources.
- Excellent written communication skills for preparing reports and documentation.
- Excellent oral communication skills for presenting findings and collaborating with engineering teams.
- Ability to travel, including travel to the United States, as required for testing activities.
- Ability to work day, afternoon, night shift, and some weekends
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- MTS RPC Pro and FlexTest experience preferred.
- Experience with validation testing and product test activities.
- Familiarity with DVP&R processes and validation planning.
- Hands-on aptitude for working with test equipment, instrumentation, and mechanical/electrical systems.
- Exposure to advanced research and development environments, including automotive or related industries.
- Background or project experience in areas such as BAJA, Formula, or similar engineering competitions is beneficial.
- Strong analytical mindset for interpreting complex test data and identifying trends or issues.
Work Environment
This role is based on-site at an Advanced Research & Development Center, working closely with cutting-edge durability test facilities and proving ground operations. The position involves regular interaction with hydraulic simulators, data acquisition systems, and advanced software tools in a laboratory and test-track environment. Occasional travel to other technical centers is required, including the ability to travel to the United States.
