Position OverviewThe Department of Agriculture is seeking a highly organized and detail-oriented
Secretary 2 (ADM06) to provide temporary administrative support for the Food Safety Program. This role has become critical following the transition of the food safety program from the Department of Environment and Climate Change (ECC) to the Department of Agriculture.
The successful candidate will support daily administrative operations, including processing permits, handling public inquiries, coordinating schedules, and delivering front-line customer service support while the department implements a long-term administrative solution.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced administrative professional who can work independently, demonstrate sound judgment, and efficiently manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced government environment.
Key Responsibilities- Provide comprehensive administrative and clerical support to the Food Safety Program
- Process permits, applications, and related documentation accurately and efficiently
- Answer incoming phone calls, emails, and public inquiries in a professional manner
- Deliver in-person customer service and administrative assistance
- Prepare general correspondence, reports, and non-routine documents
- Coordinate appointments, meetings, and schedules
- Assist with travel arrangements and expense documentation as required
- Maintain organized filing systems, records, and confidential documents
- Support office operations and ensure administrative processes run smoothly
- Exercise sound judgment and initiative in situations where established guidelines may not exist
- Perform additional related administrative duties as assigned
Required Qualifications- Grade XI education combined with:
- One-year commercial/business administration course
AND
- Minimum three (3) years of related administrative experience
- Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience may also be considered
Required Skills & Competencies- Strong administrative and organizational skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication abilities
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Strong problem-solving skills and professional judgment
- Experience handling confidential information with discretion
Preferred Experience- Previous experience working within a government or public-sector environment
- Experience supporting regulatory, licensing, or permit-processing functions
- Front-desk or customer-facing administrative experience
Work Arrangement- Onsite role located in Bedford, Nova Scotia
- Work schedule is Monday through Thursday only
- Temporary assignment expected to run for approximately 4–5 months while a permanent administrative solution is implemented
