Job descriptionSpectacular Northern lights, mountain views and a laid back, slow paced, small town experience is what you can expect in Norman Wells! Norman Wells is a small town in the Northwest Territories along the Mackenzie River that offers a great sense of community and family. I moved here 12 years ago from Ontario on a 1 year teaching contract and Iiked it so much I decided to buy a house and stay. Your job would be a live-in position that would require you to re-locate to a small town in the north. Flights will be covered as part of the contract. This is a 10-month contract with full-time hours. As I am a teacher, I require childcare during the school year only and not during the summer months. There is potential for the position to be extended a second year for the right candidate. This position includes a partially fixed and partially flexible schedule. On a regular basis, you would help care for the children before and after school, as well as during the lunch hour. These hours would generally fall between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday. Flexibility will also be needed from time to time for meetings, appointments, or special events that may arise outside of the 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. scheduled times. The preferred start date is August 24, 2026. You would need to be available to re-locate the week before you start work. I have 4 children (4, 6, 8 and 10 years old), The children get themselves to and from school and need care for a short time before and after school as well as at lunch hour as they go home for lunch. There are also about 20 professional development days during the school year where there is no school so you would watch all children on those days. We also have a 5 year old beagle cocker spaniel. Your responsibility would include letting her out into the yard a few times during the day to go to the bathroom and make sure she has food and water in her dishes. We can chat during an interview about what your expectations are and what other tasks you will be able to manage. It is common, here, for families to have a nanny or AuPair live with them, as there is no daycare, which means there is a network of contacts that you can speak to about their own experiences to see if moving to the north is the right fit for you. Our current nanny is happy to be a reference for our family. We built a great relationship with her and we are sad to see her go, but happy that she is moving on to be closer to her family. Norman Wells is a small community with opportunity for participating in a variety of workshops offered throughout the year to do things like learn traditional beading, sewing, drum making, jelly and tea making among other things. You can get a gym membership, go skating in the winter or drop in to join a basketball or volleyball game at the school gym if you are interested. There is also cross country skiing and curling. In the winter, there is only a few hours of daylight and in the spring/summer, only a few hours of dusk. It's quite amazing to experience both! In May everyone looks forward to river break up where mountains of ice and huge chunks of candlestick ice push up onto the shore off of the Mackenzie River. I am looking for someone who is enthusiastic about living in the north. The main priority of course is childcare, but I also want to provide an exciting and unique experience to someone who is interested in exploring a new part of Canada! I want to make sure that the successful candidate will enjoy their time here and feel like a valued part of our family during their time with us. If this sounds like something you'd be interested in, I'd love to chat, answer any questions you have, as well as get to know more about you!
