Description:

ABOUT US

The Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto is at the centre of one of North America’s largest biomedical research, education and clinical care networks. With nine fully affiliated research-intensive hospitals — and dozens of community and clinical care sites — Temerty Medicine offers unparalleled opportunities in Canada’s most dynamic city for our more than 9,000 faculty and staff and 7,000 learners at all levels.

Annually, Temerty Medicine contributes almost one-third of the family physicians who train and enter practice in Ontario, and over half of the specialist physicians. We also train hundreds of rehabilitation health professionals, physician assistants and medical radiation technologists, and over 3,000 graduate life-sciences learners — many of whom find work in postsecondary education and industry. Globally, we have over 69,000 alumni.

YOUR OPPORTUNITY

As Clinical Veterinarian, you will oversee veterinary care and professional services provided by the Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM) within the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, including supervision of DCM’s surgical facilities. Working in collaboration with the Director, you will delivery comprehensive veterinary care and professional services, including CALAM-aligned surgical services, investigator consultation and training, and expert protocol and animal-use reviews as a member of local and institutional Animal Care Committees.

You will also provide professional administration of the animal care program, including oversight with respect to resource allocation and maintenance of the physical plant.

You will champion regulatory excellence by ensuring animal care and use activities meet or exceed provincial and federal standards, liaising directly with regulatory officials, and communicating inspection and assessment outcomes to investigative staff.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine with a license to practice in the Province of Ontario
  • A graduate degree and certification or eligibility for certification by the American College for Laboratory Animal Medicine
  • Minimum of five (5) years’ relevant experience working in a major university or a major biotech/pharma animal care program or equivalent
  • Demonstrated experience in laboratory animal medicine, including clinical care, diagnosis, treatment, and post-mortem procedures
  • Experience overseeing animal care programs, including resource planning, facility operations, and program administration
  • Experience developing and implementing facility-wide biosecurity measures, quality assurance protocols, and SOPs, with a proven ability to safeguard the integrity of ongoing animal-based research programs
  • Experience managing, supervising and leading staff, preferably in a unionized environment, with the ability to effectively train and educate staff on ethical standards, legislation, and operational guidelines
  • Experience supporting research programs and working with investigators in an academic or clinical research setting
  • Experience providing consultation to both internal and external stakeholders, including researchers, institutional leadership and facilities teams
  • Advanced knowledge of surgical practices, instrumentation, anesthesia, analgesia, and post-operative care for laboratory animal species
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent computer skills including a good knowledge of Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word and Excel)
  • Ability to work under time constraints with minimal or no supervision
  • Ability to solve problems in a timely manner, multitask and prioritize work
