Overview Reporting to the Chief of Staff and Strategy, the Senior Director of Operations is a key member of the CBC News leadership team. In this role you play an integral role in the CBC News leadership team, setting the strategic direction for media operations and production for the department. Operations span across the country touching network and local teams, and you’ll be leading teams already in the midst of change.
In support of editorial strategy and CBC News objectives, you ensure business requirements are met, the allocation of resources, and innovative operational solutions are considered and implemented. You will lead a team of leaders, experts and passionate staff who are committed to public service.
You are a trusted partner for technology counterparts and able to guide teams through change. You have deep expertise in media operations and production and an appreciation for editorial needs.
Responsibilities
Lead and manage media operations, production and technical leadership across CBC News with a keen understanding of editorial strategy and objectives
Help CBC News deliver on transformation plans and support the objectives and editorial vision for the organization. Lead teams on ambitious technology roadmaps already in place.
Oversee the evaluation of technical and operational requirements of media production activities to ensure appropriate production resources and infrastructure are in place to meet objectives and budget targets
Lead an organization grounded in resiliency, continuous learning, process and program management with our people in front of mind
Ensure maximization of allocation of shared resources and production across the department, dismantle silos and engage our people
Ensure adherence to policies and procedures and ensure that production and operation policies and procedures evolve with quick changing technologies and contingencies.
Lead contingency planning for programming and emergency preparedness
As needed, act as the escalation point contact for emergencies and issues that require production and operational input and for problem solving
Guide the expansion into new markets for media production, infrastructure, and operational requirements (i.e. design and start-up of new bureaus built for future)
Strategic Initiatives
Build and maintain strategic relationships with key operational and technical collaborators across CBC/Radio-Canada to ensure alignment and management of priorities.
Galvanize operations leaders and teams in supporting the transformation under way at CBC News.
Integrate local and network technical strategies into a seamless divisional resource.
Provide regular and ongoing strategic and tactical advice to CBC News senior leadership regarding production, operations, allocation of technical resources
Provide strategic, data-driven management of our capital assets in partnership with collaborators across CBC/Radio-Canada.
Manage operations operational/technical budget and project timelines.
Annually, ensure the evaluation of production to determine the viability of production given operational and technical considerations.
Ensure the teams have clarity in purpose. Create alignment on priorities and the equipment they need to perform their duties to the highest of standards
Qualifications
Minimum 5 to 8 years experience in a directly related field, with at least 3 years of leadership experience at the Director level
Proven leadership skills in facilitating team collaboration, leading meetings, projects, innovation and change.
Excellent understanding of the business and production aspects of programming and media production.
Bring a creative approach to ensuring the development and implementation of new strategies, work methods and business practices.
Leading and developing a diverse group of employees working in technical and production functions in a unionized environment where inclusivity is a core value
Setting the priorities and balancing competing production and business requirements within budgetary restrictions and production deadlines.
Experience leading change, motivating staff and continuous improvement.An ability to establish strong business relationships with internal and external clients and stakeholders.
Previous experience in contingency planning and emergency management in a production environment.
French language skills are considered an asset
This role will require travel up to 30%
