About the Role:

Reporting to the Manager, Residence Life, the Transition and Support Coordinator, Residence Life provides non-clinical supports for students in residence experiencing challenges with transitioning to the University residence environment, with a particular focus on mental health challenges. Critical responsibilities include developing and implementing student wellness and transition support programs. The incumbent will aim to create a positive and successful student housing experience within the campus community.

The Transition and Support Coordinator, Residence Life will:

  • Act as a main resources expert in Housing Services to provide general information about student wellness and transition support to students, staff, faculty and community members;
  • Serve as a primary point of contact to receive, respond, and triage follow up with students in residence experiencing barriers such as mental health challenges, suicidal ideation, eating disorders, and substance abuse;
  • Coordinate services for at-risk students and students in need of wellness and mental health support, including providing case management support as needed;
  • Develop and maintain sound working relationships with campus resources and external partners, including community partners to assist with navigation and reduction of barriers, and to improves processes that enhance services;
  • Provide data and participate in the development of transition and support programs and campaigns by conducting research and drafting program development plans;
  • Develop and facilitate campaigns to promote health and wellness initiatives in collaboration with campus partners, as required;
  • Collect data, evaluate the effectiveness of student transition and support programs and provide recommendations for further improvement;
  • Coordinate transitions and support for students to external community resource providers, specialized in treatment programs and crisis;
  • Respond to student, staff and community support needs that arise as result of crisis or emergency situations;
  • Follow up with and support students living in residence who have been identified as high risk by the Campus Assessment, Response, and Education (CARE) team;
  • Provide training workshops for staff about mental health awareness and low-level response, wellbeing, and harm reduction;
  • Develop and facilitate training workshops for students in Residence, including Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), SAFE talk, Working Mind, and More Feet on the Ground.

Key Skills and Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field and experience in a role supporting student development, mental health, student support program experience;
  • Knowledge of current best practices, trends and issues related to student development, risk management, and students-at-risk;
  • Knowledge of advising techniques, interviewing and conflict resolution, with skills in conducting risk assessment;
  • Working knowledge of crisis intervention and case management best practises;
  • Demonstrated commitment to building and maintain relationship with diverse students;
  • Skilled in developing and delivering learning workshops related to mental health;
  • Knowledge of FIPPA, AODA, Health and Safety, and Human Rights legislation;
  • Solid computer competency including word processing, spreadsheet, database, web applications, Outlook, PowerPoint, Workday, Adobe Acrobat, etc.;
  • Effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas and persuade others to achieve common outcomes;
  • Ability to secure support from existing networks and to capitalize on new partnership opportunities;
  • Strong facilitation, training, and presentation skills;
  • Flexible and responsive to changing needs in a dynamic and fast-paced environment;
  • Tact, discretion, and experience handling confidential information;
  • Ability to handle urgent situations in a calm, diplomatic and tactful way;
  • Ability to identify areas of risk and/or opportunity and research and develop recommendations to address;
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, psychology, social work;
  • Certified trainer in MHFA, SAFE talk, ASIST, or equivalent;
  • Experience working in multi-disciplinary groups and/or inter-departmental communication and coordination.

Salary and Total Rewards:

  • Job Grade K, Salary Scale ($62,115-99,384);
  • Target Hiring Salary: $62,115*
  • This is a permanent position that includes:
