Who We Are

Simon Fraser University is a leading research university, advancing an inclusive and sustainable future. Our purpose – the essence of SFU – is to create and connect knowledge, learning and community for deeper understanding and meaningful impact. We are committed to fostering excellence, innovation, belonging and community in all that we do.

In the School of Medicine, we are committed to shaping the future of healthcare through innovative education, groundbreaking research, and community engagement. As we embark on this journey to redefine medical education, we are seeking passionate individuals who are eager to contribute to our mission.

We envision a medical education system where students and residents learn as part of a team in primary care, community-level settings and patient-centred environments. Our curriculum considers social, environmental and prevention contexts while seeking to advance reconciliation by embedding and equalizing Indigenous knowledge systems in our learning, research and practices. As we establish the School of Medicine in Surrey, B.C., we will foster our growing relationships with the local community, Fraser Health Authority, First Nations Health Authority, physicians and Indigenous partners who will help us meet the diverse health needs of the communities we serve. We seek to improve access to primary care throughout the province while resting on a solid foundation of high-quality, accredited education and world-class research efforts that keep us oriented toward measurable and socially accountable outcomes.

About the Role

The Learning Technology Specialist supports the School of Medicine’s digital learning environment by developing, implementing, and optimizing educational technologies across undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education programs. Working closely with faculty, instructional teams, IT partners, and external consultants, the role combines technical expertise, instructional design, and project coordination to enhance online and technology-enabled learning. It directly supports the School’s goal of delivering high-quality, learner-centered medical education through effective course design, faculty support, and continuous improvement of learning tools. Key initiatives include LMS enhancements, technology integrations, piloting new digital tools, improving student engagement, and leading course development and implementation projects.

The ideal candidate is a collaborative and tech-savvy professional with strong expertise in learning management systems, instructional technologies, and online course delivery. They possess excellent project management, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced academic environment. Success in this role requires strong technical troubleshooting abilities, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to supporting faculty and learners. The candidate should demonstrate adaptability, initiative, and a commitment to continuous learning while effectively collaborating with diverse stakeholders. Experience with instructional design, digital learning tools, and training or mentoring users is essential.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in Education, Business, or a related discipline and three years of related experience in areas such as instructional design and support on specialized Learning Management Systems (LMS), or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Strong knowledge of learning management systems (LMS), instructional design principles, and educational technologies, including Canvas and Moodle-based platforms.
  • Excellent project management, planning, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve issues related to online learning technologies.
  • Excellent communication, training, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to support and collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and external partners.
  • Ability to evaluate emerging educational technologies and provide recommendations that enhance teaching, learning, and student engagement.
